Top will not unlatch

2004 Z4 2.5 auto. When I press the top down button I could hear the unlatch motor running but the top would not unlatch. I removed the top latching motor and found that the nylon gear that turns the flexible shafts that go to the latches was cracked in half. Before I install a new gear I tried to turn the flexible shaft that goes to the right latch but it would not turn. I tried pliers and still could not get it to turn. I hesitate to install the new gear as I think a jammed latch might have caused the original gear to crack. What could cause the latch to get stuck and how can I release it?

problem identified not solved

I think I have identified the problem but not the solution. The top latch on the right side has a micro switch to stop the latching motor when the top completes the closing cycle. If that switch does not do its job the latching motor will continue to turn which over tightens the latch and causes the nylon gear to fail. I am still trying to figure out how to break loose the overtightened latch. I have tried to use the flexible shaft and pliers but because the shaft is flexible it won't apply the initial torque to break it loose. Any suggestions?
