Tip to all: Adjust your E39's door latches for fresh German feel! WUHU!

I bought a Torx T-40 bit today at Autozone for 3/8" drive. Easy as pie, take your ratchet, extension and your T40 3/8" bit and loosen both bolts on the latch. Shouldnt take much effort to loosen them. Don't be afraid or intimidated. These latches are nothing fancy. Then carefully slide the latches backwards towards the center of the car just a wee bit. I'd say 1/2 a millimeter or millimeter at most. You can see the outline of where it used to be. Hand tighten each bolt at small increments being sure to take turns keep switching back and forth. Then take your ratchet and tighten away. Don't turn too tightly. Just enough to be Extremely snug. Then test it out! Close your door. Shouldn't take much effort to close--think showroom cars. If done right, all gaps UP and DOWN, left and right will be even and the door will open and shut with the firmness it did when new. My doors now feel great.

Again pay attention to the gaps and make sure the doors line up with eachother. Adjust accordingly. Don't be afraid to keep readjusting the latch til you get it right.

oh my gawd, I can't believe I wrote "DOOT" latches in the subject. I complain about people who do that sort of thing the most too. Bah. Mods can you fix? OCD OCD.

Sounds like a good thing to adjust. It probably moves from repeatedly shutting doors on these parts. I'm going to check the car when I go out for lunch to see if they've moved at all.

Sorry are you guys confused as to what part to adjust? There's nothing much to look at its just a door latch and looks the same before and after... It's the thing the door latches onto when shut. It's on the B-pillar. By where the stickers/vin# are on the door jamb. I can take a pic if you guys want. its simple... and I did it because my doors felt sloppy and my drivers door would actually rattle around when driving over bumps! WTF! now its super tight. If you look closely you can see where the door seals against the car body and the outline of where the door seals USED to sit. The door is now pushed in ever so slightly.

Nice tip really, if the panels have never been off then these bolts have just been being pushed away from the center for years with no re-adjustment. It really can make a difference.

Yes it does. Ive always been intimidated cause to me the latches seem like a "don't F with me" type of item... but they're really easy to work on.

Great idea. I just repaired a botched replacement door handle install (didn't put the wire in the groove) and it made the car feel almost new . My door's been rattling for a while and hopefully this fixes it. It didn't occur to me as a problem :\

I tried it on my DS door, have yet to drive with it though--previously only Gummipflege had taken care of what noise did exist...

Yeah it seemed like a creak in my frame or maybe a bad weld or something. it was just the door rocking around because it was loose due to 12+ years of opening and closing. It still doesn't feel AS new as the other 3 doors as the other doors never get used but still a BIG improvement. My drivers side exterior door handle doesn't seem to operate smoothly. Kinda dry. Sprayed WD40 and helped with the sticking but its still not perfect. Anyone know of any other components/rubber i can replace to make the door handle feel new?

WD40 is good as a water repellent but not so good as a lubricant. Get some spray white lithium grease and use that on the hinges, etc.

I second that - solves noisy metal parts in one swoop but white lithium is messy. Be sparing and wipe off excess delicately.

Very true, it can run and drip.

Graphite lube would probably be even better. Works incredible on older door locks. Seriously. I had to read about 5 posts into this thread to even figure out WTF it was about!

lol, i couldn't understand why either. the only time we mess with a latch is when a car was wrecked in the door. i never heard of a latch just loosing up, from opening and closing the doors.

Think of it as an alignment for your door. Metal bends. Adjust latch. Door realigned!

Oh I didn't know there was an issue with frozen doors...rarely gets cold enough here for something like that to happen. So no I've never had a reason to look at those threads...
