I note all new F30s have keyless start how does the fob battery get re-charged BMW said you needed to use the fob on the previous system to keep the battery charged?

Keyless systems in BMWs have always been "replace your battery". Now that Comfort Access refers only to the doors and not the engine start, I guess all fobs have replaceable rather than rechargeable batteries.

Just take your fob to your friendly Radio Shack. Hell of a lot cheaper and faster service than dealers.

So glad batteries are replaceable rather than having to replace the whole key.

What happens when the batteries gives up the ghost while driving? Does the engine just turn off?

You should get a warning that your key fob battery is low before it fails. Or just change the key fob battery every two years to be safe.

F30 doesn't have a key it has just the fob?

You can use the key manually but that's not standard.

How long does a key fob battery last for comfort access F30?

I have had my F30 for two full years now. It has comfort access. The comfort access every once in a while does not work in locking or unlocking the car. How long should the coin cell battery in the key fob last? Anyone has any experience with this? Thanks!

In my experience with other cars the rather large lithium button batteries should last 5 years or more. To be safe you may want to check the cells at 3 years or just replace them. They really don't cost much. As their output falls the transmitter puts out an ever weaker signal and you have to get closer to the car. So there is at least one warning if you are attentive.

A year and a half for me. Got my car in July of 2014. Just got the low battery warning a few days ago. Picked up a replacement cr2450 battery. Popped the door open. Change battery now back to normal.

When I took delivery of my car on 1/6/16, both of the key fobs needed new batteries. I want to Walmart, into the camera section of the electronics department, and bought 2 of the Energizer 2450 batteries. (they were about $0.50 more in store than from their website.)

To replace, remove the key from the fob, then stick it into the slot on the opposite side of where you replace the key back into the fob. This will "pop" open the battery compartment. Remove the old battery, install the new battery (make sure the positive side ( the + side) is up), then reinstall the back. Reinstall the key into the fob and you are good to go.

From page 30 of the owner's manual:

Thank you, folks! Do any of you have the "comfort access" feature? I guess that feature drains the battery sooner than if you don't have it.
