Insurance skyrocket after moving to LA

I was paying under $500 every 6 months for coverage on my 328 in Kansas with AAA. Full coverage with 500 deductibles and I have never had an accident. Only claim was hail 2 years ago. I moved to LA and my quote with the same insurance company and options is $1950 for 6 months. Does that seem normal for LA or is that too high?

Btw traffic is crazy in LA with drivers that have total disregard for rules. My Uber driver on my way from LAX airport was so reckless that I thought I was going to die.

I have AAA and that seems a little high even for Cali. I pay about $2100 for (2) new 2016 BMWs, lease level coverage through AAA. I am in temecula CA though (garaged location). LA is more expensive, and it really depends on zip code.

You will need to shop around a bit, it sounds like.

AAA is really good insurance though.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that what I quoted above is for 12 months insurance (so basically 1050 per car, per year, for my wife and I)

You're not in Kansas anymore...

But seriously what do you expect? Next are you going to tell us gas is more expensive? Can't find $1 beer specials? Rent is too high?

Yes you moved to one of the most expensive cities in the country. Everything, literally everything is more expensive.

Great line

Even within LA, moving from one city to the neighboring one can make a significant change to insurance premium

How old are you, OP?
Do shop around a bit but I am going to guess that you will find most rates to be about the same
Do NOT go with some cheap ass cut rate company just to save a few bucks because they won't take care of you when you actually need it

I am aware I moved to an expensive city and I knew rents were going to be double and everything else more expensive. I was caught a bit off guard with the insurance quote, worst case I thought it would be double given my driving history but 4 times seems too high.

I got quotes from Geico, Progressive and couple others and none of them are as high as AAA, I like AAA but I might go with another company this time.

Dear Kansas, welcome to the jungle. I have driven day to day in L.A. since 1999. It is sink or swim here.

My only advice would be to drive aggressively, not defensively. Yes insurance rates are brutal. Much higher rate of accidents, tickets and theft. We had State Farm and were paying through the nose and we just switched to Geico and are saving about $55 a month between the 2 of us. My premium went from $128 a month to $108 and my wife's went down quite a bit more.

L.A. is now one of the least affordable cities in the country. I recently read an article in business insider that it costs upwards of $75000 per year (that's NET, not gross) for a couple with one child to afford the bare necessities in Los Angeles. If you make $100k in L.A., that is like making $35k in Lawrence, KY. 68% of L.A. residents rent and a very small % of the population, based on median and mean income, can afford to buy a median priced home.

Again, welcome.

Well considering half of the people there don't have insurance yet drive like maniacs because they don't have anything to lose. So yea high rates for those that do.

Funny you say that. I moved from Texas to LA two weeks ago and my quote from Geico went from $1300 (for my 335i and wife's C300) to about $5000. It was so ridiculous I couldn't believe it. Having said that after shopping around I found Progressive quoted me $1400 and went with them. Geico even called to ask why I was leaving and the lady on the phone couldn't believe the hike in premium. Try shopping around.

Dang I thought NJ was high. Shop around there is no advantage staying loyal to one company because they don't care. I had selective for 30 years and my wife had 2 fender benders in the same year so they dropped me. I ended up going with tie geico for half the price. Doubt you will save half in LA, but insurance companies are out to make money, and if they think they have your loyalty they will!

Part of the reason LA insurance rates are so much higher. That, and a much higher rate of theft and break ins. Plus, it's a HIGHLY litigious city. Repair labor rates are also much higher. Add to that the highest percentage of uninsured drivers in the country and you begin to see why the rates are what they are.

Insurance costs way more in LA than in Kansas?

It's not that dangerous when you're going 4 mph...

You guys have it easy. The Metro Detroit area is worse for insurance, partly due to Michigan's required no fault insurance. I have a clean driving record, $500.00 deductible and car insurance bundled with homeowners. Still pay around $2200.00 annually. And my rate is pretty good around here.

Wow, things have changed since I was there 2 years ago. Then I couldn't believe how everyone drove 55 mph on the interstate. Try that here (NY/CT) and you get renovated. But yes, within that funereal pace is lots of distracted and just plain stupid driving.

Is it really different anywhere else??

Can you bundle your car insurance with other insurance needs? I finally got fed up with my auto insurance cost through Farmers even with homeowners tied in with it.

I recently called my health insurer, USAA and discussed transferring my auto and homeowners to them depending on the quote. They slashed my auto insurance premium by 50% (same coverage) and I'm only going to pay a little more on the HO. Goodbye Farmers.

Well, you're used to a more easy-going place and time. In LA, there's one phrase that smooths out most situations to your benefit: "This here's what I carry...." You'll see an example of when and how to use that in the LA Basin Orientation video below.
