E63 / E64 6 Series (2004 - 2010)
The E63/E64 BMW 6 Series builds on BMW's sporty heritage with aggressive lines and an incredible motor to back the design up. Available in coupe and convertible trims with a standard 4.8 liter engine producing 360 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque, the 6-series is a popular choice that exceeds expectations.

Strange no starting issue with 645 anybody have any ideas please?

Hi, the last few months Iíve been having random no start problems, itís always when the car is warm after a drive this could be a 15minute drive or a couple of hours, i then turn off the car and try and start it again and it doesnít crank. I get all lights radio etc everything as normal it just doesnít turn over. I can hear a very faint click from the steering collum.. after leaving for around 15/20 normally it will fire right back up like there was never a issue. Iíve scanned it and there are no fault codes.
Anybody have any information that could help me or point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance!

Charge your battery. The delay in starting is recovery of the surface charge.

Thanks for your rent! The battery is a brand new Bosch silver s5015 110a which was coded/registered when fitted,, i did wonder about the battery so I gave it a full charge overnight with a smart charger and it still happened the next day

Most likely a bad IVM module.

You should be able to search IVM repair on the forum, there is usually a cold solder joint that fails. Since it controls everything on the engine & tranny, I just change it out.

Itís abit late but Iíve got a update... the problem still exists ( I swapped out the ivm with a brand new one from Bmw and Iíve just been out for a drive and made a short stop at a shop and when I got back in it wouldnít start again! After waiting around 25 minutes it started up just fine. Iíve got no error codes again and battery is fully charged. It seems to happen on hot days and when the car is hot after longish journeys.. itís really annoying now because I canít trust when it going to start when I use it.
@HerbP do you have any more tips or ideas of what else it could be? Iím pretty sure itís something to do with heat but I could be wrong.
Or does anybody else have any experience of this issue and could help out?
It would be a huuuge help and very appreciated I love the car but this is taking all the fun out of using it

You could have gotten a lemon replacement IVM.

Although itís possible I think itís very unlikely I would have got a faulty unit with the exact same fault but no others. It was a brand new unit from Sytners (main dealer in UK)

I donít think it is the IVM now, I just donít know where else to start to look

Sounds like a heat related short. Whatever relay activates the starter isn't.

I chased something like this on a 69 Corvette, so I know the feeling.

If anybody else has the same issue I seem to have cured mine.. after changing the ivm I still had no crank problems so I carried on investigating and I noticed on ISTA the IBS was showing no information for current charge state or the last 5 days so I disconnected it (both the blue and red connected) and then re connected and then I could read the current charge level on ISTA and fingers crossed since then I havenít had a no crank issue so Iím hoping it was down to the ibs. Iím not sure how ďintelligentĒ the ibs is and wether it simply kind of crashed and just need a power cycle or wether itís actually faulty or maybe one of the connections was just loose but It seems to be working now and seems to have solved my problem I was having

Glad you found the problem, even though it got expensive changing parts. ISTA is a very good tool, you just have to learn how to use it, then work thru the steps.

It was worth it, I can enjoy driving it again now and changing the ivm wouldnít have done any harm Iíll just think of it as preventative maintenance .. ISTA is a great tool! im still finding my way around it but even with my limited experience it far surpasses inpa and dis57 which I was using before and without it I never would have suspected the IBS. After googling IBS and no crank it seems like itís fairly common even though here in the uk mine was recalled and replaced with the newer version it still must be pretty unreliable.
So if anybody is reading this with the same symptoms itís definitely worth checking your IBS, I believe if itís faulty and the cause of a crank state just disconnecting it will allow you to start the car before replacing it
thanks again for the help HerbP! I wouldnít have got ISTA if it wasnít for you recommending it when I asked about coding a new key in another thread and without ista I would have never suspected the IBS so thankyou! I really appreciate your help!
