Exclamation EU May Continue to Ban American Travelers as Borders Reopen-Please Keep This in Mind

As I've mentioned earlier in the month, the EU will likely not admit Americans for the foreseeable future and I'm not even sure if after Labor Day is a reasonable timeframe because of the significant spikes in new cases in at least 9 states.

EU May Continue to Ban American Travelers as Borders Reopen

If you do travel anywhere, I strongly recommend non-stop (i.e. no connecting flights) because the airport experience is far more risky at this point than the aircraft, where air is exchanged every minute.

I plan to take the non-stop from JFK to Vienna in early July but probably won't travel to Munich given the increase in the R0 figures (as high was 2.88 two days ago) but things could still change. Austria is one of the safest countries to visit at this point, in the same league as Iceland.

I’m curious. How are you able to travel to Austria? I could be wrong but I think I remember you saying that you had Austrian citizenship or something. But still, you’re coming from the US. Do you have to quarantine when you get there?

You have a good memory.

Throughout the pandemic, citizens of almost every country have been allowed to repatriate.

There is no quarantine requirement at this time, although there was one (with the option of an in-airport Covid-19 test) until 15.6. I believe but I might be off on the date).

JSpira,

I'm enjoying your reading your website.

I believe that direct flights from the US are on Lufthansa to Munich from Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. United is starting Newark to MUC service on August 28, 2020. Not sure about AA, and Delta is routing international traffic via AMS or CDG. Especially with Oktoberfest cancelled for this year, no reason for direct flights to MUC.

Lufthansa has a non-stop from Denver to Munich also. I have a flight booked (for now) on it in early September. I booked it through a code share with United.

Your list of flights to Munich is pretty much spot on, and just to clarify, those are non-stop flights, not direct (a direct flight differs in that it makes a stop at a midpoint airport and most passengers remain seated on the plane while some passengers exit and others board).

AUA will offer long-haul non-stop service to Vienna from JFK starting at the beginning of next month, which is what I plan to take.

I plan to limit myself to non-stop flying for the time being. Overall time spent in an AC is far safer than time spent in an airport lounge, mostly due to the air exchange rate.

.
What do they call those 'direct' flights that stop at an airport, change planes and but retain the same flight number inbound and outbound?

Before, those flights used to be preferentially shown on the primitive computer screens used by travel agents. Travel agents were busy and didn't want to go to subsequent pages with the connecting flights, many of them with longer travel times.

Non stop and direct flights were at the top. Originally, there were some advantages of direct over connections because many of them were same plane, no need to even leave the plane at a stop.

Latest update:

Europe Poised to Reopen Borders to 14 Countries, But Not to Americans or Russians

So Americans will be joined by Turks and Russians in being unable to enter the EU it would appear.

Only the citizens of 14 nations will be able to initially enter.

I'm not planned to travel to Europe this year nor am I in the market for a car, US or European delivery. However, I did find out about a potential loophole to get into Europe but am not sure if it will work. It's more of a "what if" mental exercise.

Sint Maarten is opening up to American tourists starting July 1. There is a requirement to have a PCR test for Covid-19 within 72 hours before arrival.

Sint Maarten is not Schengen but the French side is. Unfortunately, the airport SXM is on the Dutch side.

If one goes to Sint Maarten they may be able to go across the island to St. Martin. From there, it's a matter of finding a way to France. The internet mentions a ferry from St. Martin to Guadeloupe. There are flights from Guadeloupe to France, maybe through Fort de France, Martinique.

Once one is in France, getting to Munich is likely possible. (I know Jason Bourne got from Zurich to France in his first film )

You can, may and/or will be subject to a passport check, if you are found to be a US citizen. You be SOL very quickly! I like the outside of the box thinking though.

I don't think US citizens are banned. US citizen already in Europe are allowed. I think it's US citizens living in the US traveling to the EU and not among the permitted categories, which include essential workers, US citizen with a long term visa or residence permit, diplomats, etc.

Also SXM is not the only airport in on the island. The French side has a small airport, Grand Case-Esperance, which has service to PTP and FDF. From there, there are flights to Paris.

UPDATE: The St. Martin/Sint Maarten loophole is on hold as of today, June 30. The St. Martin (French) side of the island threatened to close the border with the Sint Maarten (Dutch) side if US planes were allowed to land at SXM, the big airport there. The Sint Maarten side, which was planning to open up on July 1, 2020, tomorrow, has postponed it for 2 weeks pending discussion with the St. Martin side.

As mentioned before, St. Martin is within the Schengen area but Sint Maarten is not. The border on island is generally open. Therefore, it may have been possible for Americans to enter Sint Maarten and end up in Munich via France and St. Martin (with a probable stop in Martinique or Guaduloupe, nearby French islands that have longer runways and non-stop flights to France).

Disclaimer: I have not read about the theoretical loophole but figured it out myself. That's why Bimmerfest is a wealth of information!

I can’t imagine such a loophole would have worked. Regardless of where you try to go through, when you get to a Schengen country aren’t they going to check your passport, see that you’re American and originated in the US, and then deny entry?

when you walk into the airport in St. Martin, they dont 'check you passport'.

You show your ticket, an ID to match name and picture.

There is no 'border control'

Technically you ALREADY passed a border to be able to stand inside the St. Martin (French) side of the country.

I mean if you said "hey look at this other ticket that I used to fly into Sint Maarten" maybe. And obviously you wouldnt book it all on one ticket.

Im going to guess that the loophole WOULD have worked which is why the French are shutting it down....

Im not sure Id want to buy expensive tickets to 'see if it would work'....heck, not being on airplanes with idiots is a super nice break these days. (Was clocking 100-200k a year since earl 2000s)

The wall maybe online, e.g. US traveler will be denied once US passport# is entered to online check-in

There is a possibility of EU countries letting US citizens living in the US into their country because of a boyfriend or girlfriend. See this tweet of July 2nd. https://twitter.com/YlvaJohansson (EU Commissioner for Home Affairs). I don't think one can claim they have an intimate relationship with a car that is sitting in the Welt.

Guys, just to tell you ... now is the time to sit home and amass great fortune by not spending even a penny - especially so on travelling. Just. Don't. Do. It.

I went 200 miles south to the Cumberland Lake in Kentucky for business and quickly kicked the idea that travelling with car only is a good idea. Nobody knows anything. You cannot rely on any information your read on your phone/tablet/PC. You gotta pick up the phone and verify with a human whatever it is you are planning to do - even just a simple thing as going to restaurant to eat. That's domestic travel.

I contacted two embassies (transit country and final destination country) and called Delta 4 times before departure. I had to go home to Croatia last Thursday because my mom is not well and needs 24 hours care. After all this and all the due diligence I did before the trip, I got to the Detroit airport (Delta didn't have a single seat anywhere for a Diamond passenger from Cincinnati to Atlanta) only to be told I will not be allowed to go on the trip. It is a classic. There is a computer that does not want to print my boarding pass - and that's it. Human is looking shell-shocked and feeling terrible looking at me when I explained why, against all my better judgment, I actually had to go. Nothing. Computer says no. She tried talking to some people on the phone and allegedly the reson was Holland's refusal to grant me the transit on Shiphol to board the plane to Venice. I have 2 EU citizenships, not one. Couldn't check in, didn't board, took a car and went back to Cincinnati.

So, word of wisdom to all of you ... nobody knows anything, nobody can tell you anything, at least in US humans cannot do anything if computer doesn't say so. Better Call Saul. Only $10/month and so much better than dealing with everything that is called "travel" today. Just stay home and tank the economy. Enjoy money you saved when nobody has any left. You win

Sorry to hear Mark. Most airlines rely on TIMAC for immigration/transit/passport information, which is automated. Now with boarder controls changing hourly, nobody knows how to think.

Might have been different if you had citizenship at the transit point. and or booked a separate onward ticket. Dunno, just WAGs

July 4 there was a private jet w Americans, Kiwis and Aussies that flew from Colorado to Sardinia. US pax refused entry. Kids and all in tow. After 16 hours they all bailed, flew to UK.

Bad times....
