X5 M50i Range

My M3 lease ends in 6 months, and turning attention to next car. Down to two choices, both quite different but share the same heart - M550i or X5M50i.

Question out of curiosity - in real world driving what range are people getting from a tank? I ask not as a concern of MPG or gas prices, but more trying to avoid frequent visits to gas station.

My M3 used to get about 260 miles per tank when I was 50/50 city/hwy, but now 20/80 city/hwy, I've seen the range increase to 300-330 miles. That's still a trip to the gas station once a week.

With a 22 gallon, tank, is anyone getting close to 400 miles a tank with more hwy driving?

I was getting close to 30 mpg on the highway in my M550. Obviously, much less when you mix in city driving. Hope this helps.

Did you always follow big semis to get 30 mpg?

I'm a "very conservative" driver and with my mere 540xDrive and with but an 18.0 gal tank I'm typically able to run 400-500 miles on a tank of 93.
My best highway economy [but not trying to set any land speed records] for that car is in the very low 30's ... 31.2/33.4/30.9 have been my last highway jaunts up and down Rt 95. Of course if you're stuck on Rt400 with anything labeled "M" your mileage might be less :-(

I do sometimes want to have a slightly larger tank in my cars but IF I were looking for long range between fuel-ups I'd be shopping for a diesel ... alas, that's soon to be history :-(

30 mpg with typical highway driving 75-80 mph. And no, I was not following trucks.

Impressive. Better fuel economy than diesel. No wonder that diesel in the US is dead...

Mein Auto: 2020 X5 M50i
With my 2017 X5 5.0 (which should be very close to the 2020 X5 M50i in mpg terms), I can get 400 miles out of a tank with pure highway miles and keeping it under 80 mph (so mpg of low-20s). But it's a heavy vehicle with a much larger frontal area to shove through the wind, so it's never going to do as well as a M550i.

Lots of variables but the EPA mileage number should scale to your driving style. The 550i is rated at 20mpg combined and the X5 is 18mpg, so 10% less. Therefore, you should expect 10% lower range with the X5 (assuming both models have the same size fuel tank).

edit: my 2017 X5 5.0 is EPA rated at 17mpg, which is less than the 2020 X5 M5.0. So somehow they squeezed more fuel economy out of an engine that produces about 60 more HP.

One of my biggest issues with BMW sedans - 18 Gallon gas tanks. M550 will rarely get you over 400 miles per tank unless you are doing a lot (90%+) of highway cruising.
At least the X5 has the 21.9 gal tank. Mercedes uses 21-22 gallon tanks on their E and S models...wish BMW would!

Thanks for the feedback - very helpful The 10% less note above is perfect, and is nicely offset by the fuel tank being ~21% larger. I'm with you on BMW's small fuel tanks also - my M3 only take 13.5 gallons even when I run it low. Way too small.

What fuel economy do you get? Mine gets much better than that. I get close to 600 miles a tank around town. and a little over 700 on the freeway.
