Dealer replacing 5W-30 with 0W-30

Apparently, the 5W-30 is no longer available and BMW has instructed dealers to substitute it with 0W-30...wonder how this will affect oil consumption?

Oil will be thinner at startup so more prone to oil burning when the car is cold. I'd imagine it may cause a few more problems them help. Honda ran into the same issue when they went from 5W-20 to 0W-20, lots of cars burning oil that never burned a drop before.

Marginal changes really, I run 0w-40 German Castrol (castrol edge Syntec Euro Formula), don't notice any differences in sounds or any consumption, the only reason they when with 0w is for FE (fuel efficiency) minded and secondary benefit is better cold flow...I'd stick with xW-40 grade because BMW tunes their engine to run their oil's and coolant on the hot side.

I literally just got my annual oil service done at Ontario BMW last week. I will have to have a look at what oil weight they used.

Trying every trick in the book to meet those CAFE rules without spending major $$ on new designs, huh?
