94 325i limp mode dash light on, mechanic says its needs a trans.

I have a 1994 325i convertible that has had the limp mode light come on when the car is started cold. After the car warms up and its driven slow for about a mile or so, then shut it off. When I restart the car again the limp mode light goes out immediately. The transmission works fine from then on, until its cold again. It seems like the transmission must be engaged for a short drive before the limp mode no longer appears. I have seen videos where it could be 2 solenoids under the pan, I have also been told it could be a cable? Any ideas before I have to pay for a transmission that I really would rather avoid.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions. Don

I have 144k miles on the car. Any ideas of a good place to get a used trans in S W Florida or close.

Could be the solenoid.. Could just need fluid change and top off. If its terature related, probably mot the trans itself.

thanks for replying...it just doesn't make sense for the trans too run fine after its been driven in 2nd gear for about a mile. Cut the car off and when I turm it back on the limp mode light goes outand the trans seems to run just fine. Shifts gears etc...Car runs good other than this headache. Need a diagnostic tool...$$$ Baffling me, worked on a lot of BMW's since 1984 . Just not a transmission guy and have never run across this issue before. Baffling the hell out of me.

If you were local I'd give you the auto out of my M3 that I swapped for a 5 speed.
