E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

E30 Steering Rack Seal Replacement

Hey guys,

I am new to this forum so hope it helps me out with my new project!

I removed the steering rack from my car due to a severe leak. I purchased a seal kit for it and I am currently trying to disassemble it.

I have been following the steps from a Classic Bimmer Bits publication (https://classicbimmerbits.com/e30-ho...-rack-rebuild/), which is great, however, I got stuck in step 7!

Step 7: Move the bottom of the input shaft. Use the 22mm wrench to remove the cover.

The bottom of my input shaft does not have that 22mm nut/cover, it has a rounded, button-like feature that I don't know how to remove.

Really need some help - I have look everywhere for some help and cannot find any tips.

Thanks guys!_a_

Welcome to Bimmerfest!

If I recall correctly, that's a cover that pries off.

Thanks!

I gave it a quick pull with some locking pliers: no success.
Tried using a hammer's claw: not enough traction and/or leverage to even call it an attempt .

The metal on the cover seems to be relatively soft too, these methods left some decent indentations on the cover.

Do you recall what tool you used to pry it off?
