Weird: Inner door handle opens but won't unlock.

Hello,

My E46 convertible's driver side door inner handle won't unlock the door. Unlocking from the key fob or from the center console button works as expected. After that I can normally open the door with the inner handle. This seems weird to me, I thought it's the same fully mechanical connection from the door handle to the actuator that first unlocks and then opens the door. How can it do one but not the other?

The door lock actuator is pretty new, only around 1 year old.

Background info:
The problem occurred shortly after I changed the door window regulator. Not straight away, but a couple of days after. Maybe I did something wrong when putting the door panel back on, I will check later this week. But I would be glad for some info on what to look for when I get it open.

Thanks!

- K.

Yep, something went wrong with that door card reinstall. Check bavsound.com, they actually have helpful videos on how to do it right. Not too complicated from what I recall.

Things are getting even weirder.

I reopened the door panel and saw nothing wrong with how everything was installed. With the door panel off I tried to unlock the door by pulling the actuator's lever with my finger. It still didn't work.

I put the panel back on and disconnected the battery for a few hours. When I reconnected it, the lock started working again, but only for a while. The next day it failed again and disconnecting the battery hasn't helped anymore since then.

What is going on?
Is this an alarm related issue? In this video at around 06:05 the guys explains about the second motor of the actuator and how it prevents the door to be unlocked from the inside if the alarm is on:
