Software Update Massacre

Just brought my '17 340xi in for warranty service and as part of it, they did a software update. Unfortunately, this resulted in a complete loss of all settings that I've had in place for 2 years. Radio presets, seat settings, everything! Even the transmission shifts differently and will have to relearn my driving style. Is this a common thing or should the dealer have been able to restore my settings?

Nope, not on the dealer. That's what happens. Any features you coded get erased, too. I believe you can back up most of your settings (though not the transmission or coding) on a UBS stick before hand.

For some reason I thought iDrive settings survive the upgrade. Would have been helpful if they warned me that settings would be lost - I definitely would have backed everything up. Total PIA.

Realistically ista should have saved most of the settings but sometimes it doesnt, i usually backup driver profiles on a personal usb before i perform reprogrammings but even then some things can be lost.

The dealer updated my software last year. A few items got reset, but no like you. I definitely didn't have to reprogram my radio presets, or other personal settings tied to my profile.

I brought this up with the dealer and suggested that they backup & restore my settings for me, and the response was that it's supposed to do that. Of course, it does not.

You can make a backup on an external USB and restore it. I've not had great luck with this either, it's kind of hit & miss as to what gets restored.

Look at it like getting a new PC or phone. A way to clean out the old history and exercise the brain remembering passwords.

Unfortunately you wern't aware of how to back up your personal settings on a USB stick. I re-up my profile to the same stick every 4-5 months so any changes I've made are on the stick for BOTH my FOBs .

Unless its warranty service I prefer not to go to the dealer for this very reason.

I'm planning to write down my radio presets. Currently, i usually use one key fob. The other one is only used occasionally. It doesn't have all of the correct stations, just a few.

When the dealer resets the oil monitor, they usually zero out the trip odometer. It doesn't have to happen if they just hold down the button a little longer. I use the trip computer like a trip odometer. My real trip odometer is calibrated to the odometer. For example, if the odometer reads 35287, my trip odometer might read 5287.3. That's because I reset it at exactly 30,000 miles. I am about 0.03 miles off because the odometer advanced a split second before the trip odometer.
