I have a 2010 f02 and I would tell you to stay away.

I LOVE the car but these issues with the vehicle are an extreme to me.

I bought the car used about 4 years ago with 49k miles. Under 1,000 miles driven, I get the low oil warning. This made me start searching forums and sure enough, it was a common issue.

I know the vehicle should be properly maintained but these issues are very well known.

Now, I don't even have 70k miles on the car and I am getting drive train malfunction, transmission malfunction.

Some scary instances: leaving the gym and merging onto the highway, I give it gas and the rpms go crazy. Vehicle goes into limp mode. I can only imagine what would have happened if I would have been merging on the highway with a fast car coming up behind me.

I took it to the dealer to be told I need a new transmission. I can't afford it at the moment so on the way home, vehicle is already driving sluggish, I stop at a red light and the car goes into Neutral all on it's own. I shut it off, and turned it back on very fast and thankfully I was able to get home safe.

I should have done a lot more research prior to buying the vehicle. you mentioned yours is a 2011. I would search the common issues but it seems they are still common after 2011.
One thing you have going for yourself is that you work on your cars so that's a plus. I guess if you get a great deal on it and go to bmw to do the 'recalls' you should be good. But please read experiences with others. These extreme cases can be pretty scary. I'd start by simply searching 'malfunction' in the search bar.

The oil sensor shouldnt be that hard to replace normally sit on the buttom of the oil pan just need to put the car on some jacks..... and for the transmission running a re adaptation with a scan tool mite fix it ur issue. My e66 had the same issue would go into limp mode and would kick. After i did it and drove it for a long drive no more issues.

If you want a F02, buy 2014 & newer to stay away from the engine problems. This is very documented here on the forum, & the net. BMW is making goodwill repairs on some of the engines, but be beware!

Problems with the N63 engine are not comparable to anything experienced on the E38 or E65/E66, I would definitely recommend searching for "N63 problems" and reading through the many threads that pop up. Most issues are expensive to fix and often require replacing the engine.

The 6-speed transmission on the pre-LCI models has many of the same issues with harsh shifts and clunking like on the E65/E66, so I would recommend only considering a 2013+ with the 8-speed.

And go with the 740i as well, preferably 2013+ with the N55.
