7 Series - G11 / G12 (2016 - current)
The next generation G11/G12 BMW 7 Series flagship forum. Unveiled June 10th, with production starting in August the 6th generation 7 Series comes in a light weight package with extensive use of BMW i carbon fiber technology. The interior quality raises the bar with a touch screen and gesture controlled infotainment system. Exterior styling has been a sticking point with mixed reviews so far.

2 keys 1 fob?

Hi fellow festers,

I just got a 750xi delivered. The car comes with the display key. However, I am a little bit confused with the other regular keys. The other keys I received is a hardware key plus fob, and another hardware key separately. The separate hardware key looks like it is missing the fob. Is this normal? I would imaging it should come with sets. Is this not the case any more?

That was what I got initially but was able to get a new set of key plus fob without charge. Check out this post:

yes it's normal. Call up BMW NA and ask them to give you an extra key fob because the display key is too big and useless, and they will by contacting your local BMW service dept.

I got an extra key fob yesterday after contacting them about 2 weeks ago. It's free.

I just bought a certified 2016 750i xDrive. It came with 1 display key fob, 1 regular key fob (containing the steel emergency key thingy) and 1 extra "steel emergency key thingy." The salesman told me that this is all you get when the original owner paid the extra $250 for the display key. I wonder whether there shouldn't be two (2) of the regular key fobs PLUS the display key. Does anyone know for sure? (I trust "someone does!). TIA

Thanks, AlteBMW. I reread previous posts, found and clicked the reference to tim330i's post. I'll contact my dealer to get the 2nd FOB ordered.

I love this great source of information!

Good luck...not sure if the cost of a new remote fob is going to be gifted to the 2nd/3rd/4th/etc owner if the original owner didn't ask or (possibly kept one of the remotes).

If you pull up the remotes & key diagrams...you can see that they initially came in a set with:
  • control unit - A
  • display key - #1, #2, #3, or #4 (they do different things or communicate different language, or operate on different RF for different markets ie No America vs Europe vs Australia vs Asia, etc)
  • integrated key - #5
  • remote key - B

Thanks, QSILVER7. The in-service date of my car was 3/31 to a first lease owner (2 years) and a second one (1 year). The salesman first gave me a "we owe" claim certificate for a second reg. fob. He then informed me that on further research it turned out that my car came only with one regular fob and the display fob. Your concern makes sense that later owners may (like me) may not have a claim to a "gifted" fob. However, I will probably take up the matter with the used car manager when the car goes in soon for a navigation software update/reload that the dealership "gifted me." Incidentally, how much time does this software reload require?

Thank you for including the diagram. So much to learn and so little time ...

Not sure how long map updates take at a BMW dealership...but when I updated to the 2019 maps (back in Dec 2018)...it took between 30-40 minutes. I purchased a lifetime FSC code & thumbdrive already preloaded with the 2019 map update from Bimmernavupdate.

Do you know if you're getting the entire North America map updates...or just the regional update?

Good question, QSILVER7. I didn't even know that there was a distinction between just a regional and an All-USA software upload. I need and expect a complete upload. Part of my reason to change from a 2015 535i xDrive to a 7-series car was planned long-distance touring to visit relatives in upstate NY and in Florida. I live in Minneapolis. Thanks for the heads-up!

Report on key fob issue after today's dealer visit (for nav software download): BMW provided the 2nd regular key fob for 2016 750i owners who requested one after paying extra for the display fob for only a limited time and only to the original owner. So said by the national BMW office.
