Which engine do I want

Hi everyone- I was a member a while back but I'm guessing it was linked to an email address I don't use anymore, so here I am with a new name. I decided I should probably start showing up to client events in something more grown up and respectable than my obnoxious Corvette or 2000 4Runner with a dent in the bumper. I looked at some other vehicles and I'm leaning towards a 70-90k mile X5.

Commute: 5k miles a year (if that) to the office (3.4 miles RT) and maybe one 70mile RT work related function a week. If that.

Tow: Just want the ability to tow my car to track (Vette or BRZ, probably BRZ 75% of the time). This might happen 2x a year. Probably less. Honestly, maybe not ever. One car is garaged at the track and the other is basically stock so I can drive it to the track. I don't mind installing an aux cooler or something if needed.

What I care about is "real" reliability. IE: I don't care if O2 sensors go bad regularly or something. I can replace them and they're relatively cheap. I can do more or less whatever is needed on the car, but I don't have the time. Sensors and maintenance is fine. I don't have enough time to do anything more than minor weekend projects (call it 2-3 hours of book time).

I assume they all have adequate power for 80mph highway driving.

Just kind of curious to hear your thoughts on towing and reliability- as well as thoughts on the car in general, reliability, things to check for, etc .

edit: also, how well they respond to mods and what mod are available. I'm probably just going to add a little power (and run aggressive street brake pads).

2017 Corvette Grand Sport - stockish- DSC Controller and Wheels
2014 Subaru BRZ - Race prepped - AP brakes, cage, coilovers, blah blah blah
1994 Miata - HPDE prepped - gutted, coilovers, seats, harness, rollbar
2000 4Runner - Needs upgrading

aka 35i.
Alignment here: The Definitive Alignment Thread

OE is Original Equipment aka 'BMW Original Parts' aka 'What you buy at the BMW dealer with a BMW label'

OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer... EITHER the company that made the OE part or.... A part this is identical to the OE part, but is sold by the OEM under their own label

OEM is not what BMW sells

I reluctantly have to agree with the n55. Especially for the short trips you make.

Not n52? Less power but no expensive turbos, nor high pressure fuel system.

35i for what you described. If serious about towing, then Diesel all day long
