Yes a proper aftermarket setup would blow it out of the water. I wouldn't call my self a huge audiophile, but I don't need a super sound system or worse-ghetto bass. This setup works perfect for me. While I love it, I know others would think it's crap. We all have our different taste like oil, tyres, food, movies, music, tv blah blah blah lol. Just so happy I can listen to music again.

100% agreed! I love a good sound system, but I like a QUALITY audio system, not some huge booming subwoofer in the trunk and nothing else. I like a full range sound system so I can hear the music, not show everybody how my bass can crack the asphalt under my car, lol.

You know I should post this as a link to troubleshooting the "falling buttons" situation on some E39s, heres how I fixed my buttons long-term:

+ Apply carefully, not too much, not too little, PATAFIX or similar product between the bodies of the button and the hole they "connect" to, obviously without covering the lights or blocking anything important.

There you go.

Did the same Bavsound upgrade in my HiFi 2003 530iA and 2001 740iL and man do those subs bump when replaced! Had to also do the amplifier in the 740iL (gotta love DSP) but the HiFi e39 system does lack bass even with bavsound speaker upgrade so sub is definitely in need!!! Any ideas for sub in non DSP car without going too crazy?

Well you don't have DSP so it's not like your limited. You could do the M-audio like setup with 1 or 2 subs bolted under the rear shelf. Or a custom enclosure that fires through the rear armrest ski package it you have that. There's loads of options for ya. Get in touch with folks like Dennis who could help you out.

Depends on whether your amp spits out sub signals or not. If so, get an integrated amp/sub box that'll accept speaker level signals, and just plug them into that. Done.

if not, you'll have to get an amp, I think. And I know, this may seem like an unnecessary extravagance- but it's not, really. (Consider: you really only need one 10" sub. The extra (#2) M5 sub- which probably costs a pretty penny- that's an extravagance.) Get a 5 channel amp. These give you 4 lower powered channels, and 1 higher powered one to drive the sub. In passing, it will make your whole system sound better.

Buy used, if you can. 5 channel amps have been around for years, and there should be plenty of used ones out there. Look on eBay.

Build a sub box, buy one, or get a Pioneer 8" or 10" shallow mount sub and mount it to your deck.

You'll have to figure channel assignments. (9 speakers, only 5 channels.) If you've gotten non-BavAuto 5.25/tweeter components, you'll have spare crossovers. Use them. Scrap the stock mids. (I didn't, because I like them, but that's A Personal Decision.)

Voila! There you go. Bass. And better SQ all round. And- probably- more room in your trunk.

And also- probably- not a lot more cost than alternatives.

2K1 525 overheated the past weekend. Pretty sure I shut everything down before sustaining any damage. Took the car to a local Indy (Theo's Auto Repair). 1st time ever using this place but I do know they have been in the same location since 2000.

Ended up replacing a water pipe and heater pipe. Both ran underneath intake manifold (had to be removed). Although I think, if given a lot of time, I could have completed the repair, time just wasn't on my side.

Expensive fix to say the least. Also replaced a few other odds and ends while intake was off. Car is back running like a top and I think I may found a place I can trust.

I have been collecting courage for a week to change my oxygen sensors, I am scared to death to go under the car, don't have any stands or anything.
My new sensors did not arrive yet but today I took out the first of two sensors. It was not as tight as expected, loosened up fine with a 22 mm wrench.
Not sure if these have ever been changed, the speedo shows 124000 miles but in the past there has been some work on the car because a carfax report shows 173000 miles.
Still, these are originnal BMW sensors, the first one does not look too good.
Getting to the other one is tricky, have to get under the car!
Hope my bank one and two limit codes goes away and that the car idles a bit better. It also stinks of gas outside when car is just started.

This e39 sacrificed itself to save myself, my wife, and my niece. We were stopped on highway 101 and got hit from behind by a RAV 4 travelling at full speed. After the collision it started smoking, we were trapped inside. We finally managed to crawl out of the front passenger window.

God bless BMW's fully-integrated road-safety technology (Safety "F.I.R.S.T.").

that 02 sensor doesnt look too bad. interested to see the other. a black one would be a rich mixture (gas smell?), a white one would be silicone contamination.

Well, car starts right up every time, mileage seems to be ok so the bank 1 and 2 codes could be caused by something else? Not related maybe, but put the car in "D" and it does not idle smoothly, in"P" its better. The car only has two oxygen sensors.
My "check engine light" never worked, not really sure why.

Completed a Dynavin D7 and Bav Sound install 540iT. Also added a back up camera in one of the license plate light slots. Took some fab work to get it to fit and routing the camera cable was a chore. Was able to conceal the camera cable all the way to the front up in the headliner. I used Killmat in place of the foam liner that literally fell apart in the rear hatch.

Off to other items...

Was unable to get to the other o2 sensor but installed the front one.
Also changed my failed windshield wash pump as the old one had given up.

Did my spark plugs, and assorted filters while in there. A lot tougher to access on a V-8 than straight 6. Once I do the oil it will be full Insp. II plus a few additional things like transmission fluid.

Great feeling to DIY and save big. https://chrisparente.com/2020/02/20/...s-and-tune-up/

Excellent write-up on your site, thanks for doing that. Do you know how much of your experience with your M5 engine is transferable to the M62TU in the regular 540? I’ve never clearly understood how many differences there in those engines past the displacement, individual throttle bodies and dual air intakes. I’ve always wondered how much the rest of the engine architecture and systems differ.

2002 540i auto, anyway to improve throttle response? Feel sluggish when step on gas, won't rev up quick enough so acceleration from stop is not fast, gas peddle feels heavy.

For real, the 7 and 8 spark plugs are difficult to get to with the fuel hose in the way and me with not large, but sizeable hands lol. What trans fluid you going with? I'm going to do the trans and diff fluid on my M5 soon with Royal purple on the trans and Mobil 1 with the diff.

Honestly have no idea? Could be anything from fuel related, to a bad sensor or Vanos. Car throwing any codes? When was the last time you did any work on the car?

You bet. Can't quote all the differences, I'll bet there is a site that lists them out. For spark plugs there can't be much difference, basic layout of engine is the same.

I went with Redline MTL. Not technically called for in E39 M5 but fluid rec'd by Mike Miller. Shifting is much smoother now, esp. when car is cold.

I tried redline mtl in my old 540i and I actually wasn't impressed at the time. Shifting felt slightly worse than the original fluid. Of course that could've been due to some other issue I didn't know about. I switched to royal purple and was much happier after. But hey, everyone has their preferred choice.
