Series question?

I am confused by the series reference on BMW's. I see the forum is divided into series? Would my 2016 428 I convertible be a series F33? how do the series numbers work? Sorry for my ignorance. I am looking at the forums and they seem to be divided by "F"s? F30, F31, etc?

Unlike other makers, BMW doesn't change the car every year.
So to put this basically, when they do make changes they are given a new series/generation name/designation.
This may help explain it.

thanks, I didn't know that. So mine is a F33, if I understand correctly...I never knew they didn't change every year... good to know.... My grand daughter has a BMW at college, not sure what year, she is, one of the reasons I got a BMW!
