Programming a single master key

I recently changed the battery in my remote key. I did some seaching on how to program a single master key and came up with multiple results with no success. Does anyone know the proper way to program a single master key using only one key??

No luck. I went ahead and bought a couple new blank key cases on Fanatics which are basically they Ebay cases. My old case is totally thrashed due to my poor skills at cutting the casing open. I got the new keys cut and transfered the electronics into the new case, car starts and all so I know the case is not bad. I will note the car will not start if the battery is put in improperly or if there is no battery at all. I have tried like 10 times to program this thing, even using the old case and no luck! Anyone have any ideas? Is there any other ways to program the key to use the remote functions????

I figured I probably will have to go if I can't do this myself. I just don't know if they are going to give me **** for having a knock off key case and tell me the only solution is to buy a new $180 key. I won't for now since I can live without the remote features but they would be nice to have. Heres a pic of the imposter key:

If I cannot find a solution I am going to check with some of the indy shops around town. I definately want to avoid the dealer if possible. Anyone?

isn't the "remote feature" the only way to arm and disarm the alarm?
i tried to just turn key at the door lock, but that doesn't seem to do anything w/ the alarm

I do not have an alarm installed so I am not sure. Do you have the OEM alarm?

Dam you went on a thread reply rampage Yeah I am suprised too. I have tried it so many times and even threw in different variations. I know the key workd and the battery is brand good. I was hoping someone would know of another way to do it without taking it in

I went down to the dealership today to get some oil so I thought "what the hell, might as well ask". I told them that I had changed the battery in my key and I could not reprogram it for the remote functions. Their answer: Buy a new key. I was expecting them to offer to program it using their special equipment and charge me half an hour of labor. Nope, their solution is to fork up the dough for a new key. I am having a hard time accepting my key is bad since it originally worked, just had bad range which I thought was due to the dying rechargable battery. Dam.

I put up a good fight but you are right my friend. That's the only option I have left if I want the remote features.

The programming procedure I listed is the same they use at the dealerships. There is no special equipment or anything. If it does not work, then it's the key. Battery is not always the solution. Check the battery replacement thread on fanatics. Some people report this - the key remote stops working, they think it's the battery, crack the key open, check the voltage of the old battery - tata-ta -tattaa - 3V! get a new key - everything works.
I do not know what it is, but must be something else in the key.

I'm in the same boat, the key remote is completely dead. I'll try the battery route, but something tells me it might not be the answer...

PS: When I first replied in your thread, my remote still worked every other time, so I reprogrammed it thinking it could help, the procedure worked - door locks locked and unlocked as a signal of succesfull completion. The key is dead regardless. That's why I doubt that reprogramming is what you need...

Thanks Starless, I will see what they say at Fanatics as you suggested.

one of my keys died recently too. thankfully last time i was at the Pamona swap meet i saw a guy selling E46 keys. 10 bucks got me one which i knew i'd only use for the electronics but since the key was already cut for another car, that part was useless to me. i swapped out the electronics and the reprogram starless posted worked just fine for me. are you getting the confirmation "door lock" after each reprogram? if not, perhaps the key is fine and it's operator error.
