Noisy front X1 diff
We have a BMW X1 2011 model, the front diff is very noisy!!
BMW Brisbane have confirmed its caput. $5600 to replace is their offering ![]() Spoke to a diff specialist, he said that post 206 BMW moved to an inferior design, where they used roller bearings instead of tapered bearings. The roller bearings design is a flaw and is causing noisy diffs. Needless to say that I am very unhappy. ![]() Is anyone else having front diff issues? |

For that kind of money one could get a machinist to over haul with a better bearing.
In other words, fix the design defect. |

How many miles? Mine is at 100k kms, and I just changed diffs and transfer case oil. All good so far!

have same issue on my 2013 x1 28i xdrive...inferior bearings in front differential....mechanic I know who works on Ferrari's, sez the "kit" is not available yet for BMW....BMW will install front differential with upgraded bearings for 5500.00 (so BMW knows about the problem)......
.....best is to buy the differential from BMW for 3100.00 & get your mechanic to install...if you install used, will have same problem....... |

That's where I would draw the line, considering a used 2011 would be around 9000$ to buy i would not spend 5600$ at a stealership to repair. If it was my car i would pick up a used diff at the wreckers, install it and roll the dice! or trade it back in to BMW and be like "what noise"?
Good luck, |

FWIW, bad design or not, change the fluid on a regular schedule. My 2014 has NOT ever had the fluid changed. People don't think about these items when they think maintenance (some people don't even think much about engine oil, TBH......).
