G30 (2017 - Current)
The next generation 5 Series, chassis code G30, arrives at dealers in February 2017. Looking like a scaled down 7 Series and riding on the CLAR platform, the new 5 Series will have a focus on lightweight and sporty performance. Engines options will come from BMW's new B family for the 530 and 540 and a turbocharged V8 for the M550i. Read more about the 2017 5 Series

Remove WiFi option?

Is it possible for dealer to remove the WiFi option from a custom 2020 build order. Can't seem to do with online configurator

Why? You donít have to use it if you donít want it.
Same goes for eco mode.

Don't want to have a hotspot in car transmitting all the time. Apparently there's no way to completely turn off the WiFi radio if it's present

Yes, a wifi hotspot is probably never used and may invite hackers/government surveillance. Good thought.

WiFi is included in MY2020 so I am going to go out on a limb and say no.

But you can turn off WiFi in iDrive.

I do not believe that you will be able to use Apple CarPlay without it, in case that matters.

Not sure where you got this, but according to Apple, its wireless Bluetooth or wired connection for CarPlay.

The WiFi hotspot is not active unless you enable it. So nothing to worry about there, just leave it deselected.

Wireless Apple CarPlay uses bluetooth for the initial connection (first time pairing), then switches to WiFi. You cannot have wireless CarPlay without WiFi.

BMW documentation indicates otherwise (read your owner's manual), and you can verify that by disabling WiFi on your phone and trying to connect.

Honda does not require wifi to be on. But is also requires a wired connection. So no, wifi is not necessary even if BMW does it that way.

BlueTooth is used for the initial paring process, but Wireless is needed for Wireless CarPlay as BlueTooth lacks the bandwidth needed for CarPlay. This isn't a BMW limitation, but an Apple one.

BMW didn't implement wired CarPlay only wireless. So, yes, they need WiFi.

Sorry to sound like a butthead, here, but why did you bring this up to try and confuse people? BMW G30's clearly require WiFi for CarPlay. All cars require WiFi for wireless CarPlay. Bringing up wired CarPlay in this thread seems to serve no purpose other than to say "I'm smart". Yeah - my post comes across as an "I'm smart, too" post.

I just don't want to confuse people about what's required for a BMW G30.

When the OP said
"Is it possible for dealer to remove the WiFi option from a custom 2020 build order. Can't seem to do with online configurator"
and I replied with:
"I do not believe that you will be able to use Apple CarPlay without it, in case that matters."
What do you think "it" meant, in this case? A grilled-cheese sandwich?

Thanks for posting!

Yeah, and I asked where you got that, not specifying anything else. I only asked. That must be rude in your culture to ask.

So, please explain why you need Wifi for Apple Car Play, even though its not necessary from the Apple web site...

Ok - English may not be your primary language. I apologize for the confusion. Please be aware that the link you provided to Apple is not a full and complete list of requirements for CarPlay. For example, I only see mention of iOS 13 on that page, but there are earlier versions of iOS that support CarPlay.

runbuh, Bimmerfest allows you to "Ignore" certain users. Click on their user name in this thread, and select "Ignore". Some folks have a habit of repeating irrelevant stuff and then getting combative when they are called out on it. I ignored this particular user over a year ago, and have no regrets.

You have to pay to use Wi-Fi. Just don't pay or never authorize it. Has nothing to do with Apple car play. The cars do not come with it active, capable but not activated. My car play and connected app work fine without it.

The BMW will need wifi in order to use wireless CarPlay but it doesn't need the paid hotspot subscription. There's really no reason to not have it anyway since you don't need to activate that subscription unless you really want to.

Can I disable my camshafts? I heard the car can't run without them. Is that true?

Just to clarify - you absolutely MUST have WiFi installed and enabled to use CarPlay in a G30. A wireless hotspot subscription is another story. This CarPlay/WiFi requirement is documented in your owner's manual, and something that you can confirm in your own car's settings (this is from my car).
