I first tried removing the assembly without disconnecting any of the steering links or the axle. I'm all like "meh, what does BMW know about how do do this, Bentley too. I've been wrenching on cars for 30 years..."

As soon as the hub pushed down far enough for the strut to come out of the hub, I could feel the CV joints binding and that I was working against the bound up CV and forcing it farther into a bind, but I did get it apart.

Putting the new strut back in, I popped the inner CV apart. It went back together easily enough, but each time I tried pushing the hub down, I could get close but the CV was in a bind again and about to pop apart. I don't like putting spring compressors on the coils as it can damage the coating and cause corrosion and eventual failure.

No doubt it can be done without the extra work, but my experience pushed me to doing it the long way. No regrets.

Hard no. Having someone lean on the brake pedal is essential if you want to be able to easily loosen or tighten the axle nut.

Any public review of the B4 vs. compatible sachs out there?
Terry, you were in this discussion a couple of years back. https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh....php?t=1037129

I recommend Sachs

I think you already made up your mind, but I would recommend Sachs.
On my 2006 E61 I installed the Bilstien HDs at 145K. Firm ride, but not too bad. I replaced the mounts, stab links, and rubber pieces for the springs at the same time.
About 20K later I started hearing pop noises from the front strut area.
I started replacing parts. The tension struts, control arms (wishbones), ball joints, top mounts again, the washers at the top mounts. I even replaced the bushings and mounting pins in the calipers.
All the while the pop got louder and more often.
Finally I replaced the Bilstiens with Sachs at 176K. The pop was gone.
Now at 220K+ and no noises, ride is still similar to stock.

Now a big "at a boy" for FCP: I bought the Bilstiens at FCP and they credited me the original price towards the Sachs. They get most all of my business now.

Bilsteins quality not what they used to be

I have first hand experience with 2 sets of Bilsteins on 2 e39 vehicles. One was a 525 non-sport and the second was a 530 sport suspension - my kids' cars.

The 525 was replaced first, then the 530 about 8 months later. About 14 months after the struts were replaced in the 525 it began having a horrible knock in the front end, the right side eventually locked up solid as in no suspension movement. It took me a while to realize the almost-new struts had failed.

Wouldn't you know it, 8 months later the 530 struts failed the same way.

In the past I have raced on Bilsteins and loved them, now you couldn't give me a set.

I replaced both with Sachs (from RMEuropean) and they have been fine for over 2 years now.

The 525 has been sold with over 326,000 miles on it, the 530 has 319,000 and counting.

Like everything there's price points. Bilstein builds many different models, B4, B6, B8 which gives different price/performance options. B4s unfortunately are the lowest of the line and only prove the maxim that you get what you pay for.

You are correct - I guess I should have bought above the B6 14 month price point the second time just to give them a third and forth chance ...

Well, I was under the impression that B6s were a step up based on the price. I guess Bilstein is coasting based on brand rep now, like a lot of others. How unfortunate.

I have about 10,000 miles on my B4s and so far they seem fine. They were much cheaper than the equivalent Sachs brand. Only time will tell I guess.

Thanks, Jay. On the 382XI, Rockauto has stock B4's for about $90, Sachs for about $112. I'll probably go with Sachs, even though OE is B4's.

I thought the Sachs were the OEs?

There should be two pins in the strut bottom that align to the slot in the hub clamp. Strut tube sits all the way down against a shoulder in the hub. Top hat has a pin that lines up with an additional hole in the body mount location. Sway bar attachment goes to the back of the car.

Sorry for all of the questions but now Iíve got some confusion with the part numbers. The sachs parts are 311 755 and 311 756. Fcp sent me 317 563 instead of 311 756. I ended up calling them and they agreed to send me a new one. They again sent 317 563. Iím looking online and it says it fits the car and they look like mirror images of each other. But Iím worried about the internals. Does anybody have any idea because Iím at a loss?

Have you checked the Sachs website? It's possible that the new number superceded the old one with a similar change for the other side. Maybe FCP Euro is mixing older stock and newer stock even though the fitment is the same.

Interesting, Sachs appears to be owned by ZF. Anyway I entered the numbers on the catalog and I got this:

You were right. That also explains why the box said 311 756 but the strut said 317 563.

Sachs are OE on the E60 530 I have; Bilstein B4 (to my knowledge) are the OE on my E90 328xi
