Read everything you can, but you will find the majority opinion is to stay away from the N54. That said, I've put 100,000km on mine with so few problems I just laugh at the doom and gloom people. I intend to put at least another 100k on it.

Get maintenance history if you can.

On the test drive, don't just granny it around the block, flog it 0-60 a few times to reveal borderline issues that will throw it into 'limp home'.

True. Change your accessory belt and idler/tensioners around 100,000km. You can buy a protector plate that sits in front of the front main seal that will prevent the belt from going inside. Why BMW didn't put a flange on the inside of the pulley is a bit of a mystery, although I suppose they don't expect that to happen.

Try to find out if the HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) has been replaced.

Yes you have to drive it hard when you test drive it. I got a 2008 bmw 535i and I didn't punch it intil I got it home and all engine light came on. But it's under warranty so it's getting fixes. Check for oil leaks if engine light on get codes free at local car store

Come again?

I expect you mean 'clear the adaptations'. Not really needed - the car will pick up and gradually adapt to whoever drives it.
