Happy Garage: 3 Generations of 5ers

Mrs. Bick got her G30 M550i Saturday, so now we need to sell her F10 535xi. Meanwhile, I'm still giddily using my E60 550i as my DD. For now, though, we have 3 generations of 5ers in our garage, until some lucky buyer takes the F10 off our hands:

Heh, indeed, but not pictured is my truck, which is now relegated to parking outside.

I consider driving a BMW that is in good shape and three generations old a status symbol, a sign of diligence and intelligence. They're also cheap to own and drive compared to a new BMW.

Schweet! And I agree with audiophool, E60 alone in the passing lane...again.

Bigger garage?
In your opinion, how does the e60 compare to the g30?

Boy, that's kind of a tough one. Apples and oranges in a lot of ways - they are VERY different cars from each other, but boy howdy that G30 is a monster. A lot more power than the E60, plus those twin turbos give it a real kick in the ass. The G30 is clearly more luxurious, quieter, more refined and just, more. I love it so far, and it is clearly BMW's apology for the awful, wasted F10 generation.

But, having said that, I still think the E60 is a blast to drive. It's just so nimble, and has better tactile dynamics than the G30 - by a large measure, even though it has the electric-assisted active steering rack (well, mine does, anyway ). I really feel more connected to the road, and the car when I'm driving the E60. I wear the E60; I drive the G30. Make sense?

I'm blessed, because I don't have to choose, and can have them both.

Thank you and makes a lot of sense.
There are a lot of reasons I miss my e60.
I guess I was wondering why the g30 became hers.
I am not a pickup guy so the choice would be tougher though I can see the need of one on occasion.
Ah to have such problems!

Because I'm an opportunist! Chance to have the best of both worlds.

The real truth - and I'll try to keep this concise cuz really, who cares? - is that we were both due for new cars at the same time, and while I could've afforded to buy two brand new G30s side-by-side (no, not bragging that I'm rich or anything, but I always save in advance for my next new cars and it turns out both accounts were full), I simply could not justify it.

When I bought my 2008 E60, I originally planned to keep it for 6 years. Then the plan was to buy Mrs. Bick's new car in 2011 (the F10), and keep it for 6 years. Both of those cars were EDs. If I'd stuck the plan, we'd have a European vacation every three years, picking up a new car for me and her alternatingly.

Then, I screwed things up. I was so in love with my 2008 E60 that when 6 years was up I decided to keep her for a couple more years. Finally, in 2016 I sold it and got an M4, throwing off the every 6 year/alternating 3 year cycle.

Then, due to life and job circumstances, we couldn't go to Germany, so we postponed our plans and didn't replace Mrs. Bick's F10 on the 6 year schedule, either, we kept it until this year. Meanwhile, the M4 was on a 3-year lease that ran out in June this year, and I had already decided I wasn't going to keep it.

So, the dilemma - we already had planned over a year ago to buy Mrs. Bick a G30 and go to Europe this year. Getting rid of the M4 at about the same time raised the tricky question of what do I drive, then. The answer was simple, since last year I found and bought my present 2010 E60 550i 6MT Unicorn. I spent the winter fixer her up back to good-as-new, so I didn't need a car this year.

BUT - I didn't want Mrs. Bick to have a lame car (like the F10, which bored me to tears), so I told her "honey, we're getting the M550. You need a V8." She said OK, so basically, even though the G30 is her DD, I get to drive it whenever we go somewhere together, so I get the best of both worlds - the brand new hot rod, which I would've bought for myself, as well as the classic 2010 that I adore so much.

Aaaaannnnd everyone on Bimmerfest is asleep by now LOL

See, told you nobody would care! LOL

Yes, it is a good story.

I'm more along the lines of "I see the Poors are driving BMWs now", having always purchased used BMWs after somebody else takes the initial price hit and depreciation. I've never been afraid of the horror stories about maintenance/repair costs and have always done the work myself unless overmatched and/or without expensive special tools. Current stable of three BMWs with an average age of 13 years, and a combined 700,000km, still limping along. Only one has an error code at the moment ('04 X5 needs a new SAS).

And that's what I love about this forum - they are not status symbols to folks like us. It's much deeper than that.

Keep 'em running!

Great thread. Nice collection. I would love to see an E34 in there in place of the F10
