New here? Read This First!

Forum rules have locked the previous thread. So, a new one. It'll take a bit to restart it. The old one had 166,000 views, and will be dropping down the stack. Thanks!

New Here? At the bottom of this thread is the latest pdf version of "So You Just Bought an E60". Read it first.

Because of the way Bimmerfest security operates, I can't edit a post after a short period of time. So, I can't update the doc in the first post anymore.

So, when a new version of this doc comes out, it'll be parked in the next available post in this thread. The goal is to summarize most of the issues and comments for the new, less experienced E60 owners or potential buyers who are showing up. Drop to the bottom and you'll find the latest.

It's a continuing work in process, and it will get additions/changes as this thread grows. So, on we go:

What's new in V 4.4: Walnut Blast need and issues; Good tutorials at Pelican Parts and Bavarian Auto, a link for latest TIS advisories, a comment on voltage regulators, mileage rollback, and an updated viewpoint on serpentine belt failure. Rewrote the section about parts sources.

Thanks to Jgalon, legend700, HF, schpenxel, pcy, bmwoem1, cvshaw, gangplank, 850Csi, TSM35, twh and many, many more for their contributions and suggestions. Since the downloads count resets for each new edition, there's been about 33,100 up through V 4.4. Seems to be helping someone out there...

We hope it helps you as well.

And, since it's a critical difference between what ZF and BMW say, here's a link to the ZF fluid change procedure and schedule. Hint: it's a whole lot less than BMW's "lifetime" nonsense. I'll cc it into the doc later. Thanks to Bud B for the link.

Just A Simple Thanks

banglenot,

I just wanted to say thank you as a new bimmer to the hard work that goes into putting a document together. And also, for the insight that you provide to not just myself but many others out there who do post on your forums. Now, I may not have read the previous version of this document before I purchased my 2007 525i (cringe...right, for lower end of the E-60 class). But I did read it shortly after purchasing and read it through, as well as took your advice and contacted Mike to get a copy of the beloved maintenance schedule. But once again, thank you so much, and I do look forward to learning more from this awesome community!

Thanks for the kind words. I've found with education, tools, and finding the right parts at a reasonable cost, these cars can be owned for not much more that an American sedan.

There's a number of great people on here who help each other. Everyone can help by posting the fix on their problem when they find it.

I also want to say thank you for all this work. I'm coming up on 4 years owing my first e60 and added an e61 last summer. Very cool cars and not awful to work on at all. I've been doing my own repairs for 40 years or so but always domestic until these cars. Your info has been very helpful and I refer to it often.

With having to do budget repairs on a total of 4 e60s, I agree with your cost statement for ownership cost.

You could link to an external hoster, e.g. a Google Drive folder or similar.
Link will stay the same (folder won't change) but you can change the contents.

Best thing to do is start a separate thread -- people are more likely to see your problem.

(Also, explain it better. Lots of description left out -- the clearer you are the more likely you'll get responses.)

This link doesn't appear to be valid any longer or I'm html challenged. I just edited it. Maybe not as html challenged as I thought. Nope it appears that thread may have been deleted, archived or otherwise moved.

Ok just read the whole thing

Ok I read it all and I am not scared. I rebuilt my LS1 and T56 in my 1998 Corvette which I owned for 18 years and 132k miles. So nothing in here really shocked me. Found it very informative and will be the starting point of my discussion with the shop I have scheduled to look at as you said “pretty” ‘09 535i. Want to make sure there are no warts hiding under there before I buy. Thanks

You should have no problems, of course. This is as much for those who never held a wrench, or those who've never owned an E60. For you, it's a heads up on typical problems. Range from "more likely" (early N52 waterpump) to "almost never" (TPMS transmitters). Good luck.

Eccentric shaft

Hey Banglenot, though the intro of the new version of the doc mentions eccentric shaft, I didn't find the actual content later on....

banglenot, I just have to ask. Under DIY and Maintance on page 11, Oil/Filter, for several years it has read, " Cheapest solution: Mann filter online and Castrol Edge 5-40 LL-01 at nearest big box store." I always figured you must be a better scrounged than I am. I concede! Just where are you finding Castro Edge 5-40 LL-01 in a big box store at a good price?

Good point. I've added a small description into the doc.

In the meantime, here's a replacement guide from Pelican: https://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tec..._Replacing.htm . It's for the E90, but similar for any N52 -N54

4.7 "So You Just Bought an E60", April 30th

What's New: Added Table of Contents. Moved the "search for a new BMW" rant to an appendix. Overall cleanup. Mostly typo fixes. Cheap LL-01 oil: Castrol Edge Euroformula 0-40 and Walmart. Appendix: DIY Repairs and Maintenance From Delivery to 100K Miles.

Thanks to all for finding typos etc. Please comment if you have additional ideas.

Goal is to summarize most of the issues and comments for the new, less experienced E60 owners or potential buyers who are showing up.

Work in process, and it will get additions/changes. Edited versions will always appear in the most recent version of this message.

For newbies interested in finding OEM or OE parts other than the expensive BMW branded ones, see the illustration below from FCP euro at https://www.fcpeuro.com/page/oe-academy

Amazing how the price changes when the BMW logo is removed.

Version 4.7 of the So You Just Bought an E60 PDF indicates, "Want to know the theory and ops of the E60? Look at the link below for a long list of detailed training docs.", but bmwmotorsports.org seems to have gone away...

Below are the Technical Training PDF's for E60 Complete Vehicle. I will add another post for the E61, along with 9/2005 and 03/2007 updates. Please note the publication date on these PDF's, as some information may NOT be relevant to your model year. These are for US Spec vehicles.
