Ok. So my '97 2.8 Z3 has a squeak coming from under the good. I think it's the idler oily but I can't tell for sure. I tried listening to it but I just can't tell. Does anyone have any tips on narrowing it down? Are there pullies any that are more suspect than others?
The old trick for locating a sound is to cut off the end of a broom stick and put one end to your ear and touch the other end to the parts in question. Just be careful you don't contact the fan with it.
You should also be able to pickup a cheep electronic version from Radio Shack.
Take the belts off and spin the idler and tensioner pulleys. They should have some resistance. The pulley spin freely indicate bearings are worn. I believe BMW recommend changing around 60k. They usually go out between 60k to 100k. You don 't want these pulleys to go out and tear your belts.
I will pass on the advice that someone gave me on the forum: Spray a little water on the belts. If the squeal goes away, the noise is coming from the belts. If not, it is probably a pulley. I changed the two belts, and no more squeal.
