Why do the shocks need replacing but not the struts? What do you hope to accomplish with coil overs, which should be done for four corners?
If you just need rear shocks because one is bad, get KYB shocks, and new upper mounts if you can afford them, and replace the struts with KYB as soon as you can afford that.
If you are going to stay stock or close that, I'd suggest Sachs, Kyb or Bilstein Touring. If you replace all four, Koni sports. Coilovers gets you into a variety of choices.
I replaced the shocks on my 98 2.8L with Sachs because to one of the original shocks started to leak. The replacements gave me the same OEM ride as the originals.
"Yes, I agree. It really is not an enjoyable ride. I've been in both an e36 328i and an e36 m3 with bilsteins, and it is too harsh for a daily driver. I can see why you would want that kind of stiffness on the track, but for the bumpy pavement of my city it's very unpleasant." http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...60&postcount=5
"... for a daily driver on a budget, I put Monroe shocks and struts on the 2.5 convertable. It was about $350 for all 4 corners and has a great ride. The M Coupe has the H&R/Bilstein combo and definitely rides FIRM." http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7408179&postcount=24
