Does wireless charging work for iPhone?

Iíve read that the wireless charging works with certain android phones only. So iPhone is out of luck?

Works with iPhone, except there's currently a bug where putting an iPhone on the wireless charger will bring up Apple Pay on the phone.

Not sure if it will be OTA or not, but supposedly it will be fixed. Lots of bugs. This one ranks low on my list.

I just ordered a 40i with M sport package. It sounds like there are so many software bugs. I'm concerned...

I was expecting to run into issues and mentally preparing myself not to get too worked up about it. Have had mine for 10 days now and only experienced two very minor issues on two days - my weather widget disappeared and I had the BC button/hud issue. (bc button not working, lists and nav not showing in hud). Both were fixed after letting the vehicle sit for awhile. If I would have rebooted Idrive I'm sure I could have gotten them back right away.

I think this latest version that they are putting on the new builds has solved a lot of the problems.

FWIW, I have a wireless charger for my iPhone xs...putting it on a generic wireless charger doesn't do any special. Not sure why it would react that way in the car. Apple Pay uses the near field device which has nothing to do with the charging.

The Apple Pay activation has something to do with how the car communicates with the phone to use it as a key instead of the fob (which is not enabled for iPhone yet).

Hello dont know if its too late, anyway it works with my iPhone, I have the sort of "phone" key they have as an optional, and it also charges in the wireless charger spot, so I believe any phone with wireless charging will work fine.

Just got my X5 with wireless charging. Works fine with iPhone. You do have to have the iPhone with the glass back, not metal. So newer phones only.

It will work with older iPhones (I have a 7). you just have to buy the case from mophie that allows it to charge.

I've had my G05 for about 850 miles and have not had any issues at all with Car Play, charging, software, etc... The thing is great so far. I have had 2 50i's before this that both had new engine swaps. I am feeling much better about the 6 cylinder also. The power is more than enough, even for a guy used to the 8. The only thing I really miss is the cold start sounds.

The wireless charger really seems to heat up the iPhone ... and doesn't do much charging.

I too found charging mediocre for iPhone 10 and 11 - too much heat and not enough charging possibly due to the Apple Pay activation - I use cord charging from the USB-C socket in the arm rest which also means my phone safely tucked away so I'm not tempted to fiddle with it while driving!

I wonder how critical the physical location of the phone in the charging pad is...some charging pads are less critical than others, and some just won't plain work unless quite well centered. Also, some cases can be really problematic with wireless charging.

Yes. Noticed that too. Wireless charging really heats up the phone and charging rate is virtually non existent now after 2 months ownership.

Just an update on the wireless phone charging pad ...

My wife and I both have newer iPhones and these phone charge just fine at home on a wireless charging pad. But, now in the 2020 X5, when placed on the charging pad, the rate of charge is very slow ... to the point of only barely keeping up. Also, the phones get quite warm. It seems that the wireless charging pad is primarily heating the phones and not charging them. I notice some people have experienced this as well. I have not yet needed to take the car to the dealer for any routine service as it is still fairly new ... what has been response for warranty claim?

It's not the pad heating up, it is the battery while being charged generating the heat. The charging wattage on the BMW is low, probably somewhere around 7 watts and that make for a slow charge. Someone on this board has posted the correct charging wattage if interested. The iphones always gets warm sense first introduced with the BMW charging pad in 2017 I believe.

Thanks, Sonny184,

Yes. I know it is not the pad heating up ... it definitely is the phone. And charging rate is very non existent. Best described as glacier.

On the wireless pad on our kitchen counter, the phone charges very nicely, does not get hot ... it only gets as warm as if you had plugged in the Apple Lightning cable. And it charges fairly fast. That pad on our kitchen counter has a rating of 10 watts.

With the wireless pad on the X5, it is useless as a charger.
