I own a 1982 BMW 320i 5 speed manual and my mechanic replaced few seals in the transmission as there was a little leak. After he buttoned up everything the transmission would not come out of 2nd gear. Any ideas??

If the detent ball is forced into the shifter shaft hard enough it becomes impossible to change gears. That can happen if the plug that has a shoulder is inadvertently swapped for a plain plug that will screw in too far.

Thanks.
The technician is looking into this now and hopefully he can resolve it. Looks like exactly what you described happened in my case.

They again have to open the back end of the transmission to see what is going on.
They removed the back end to replace the seals and it stopped shifting after they put everything back together. They still do not know the cause

Weird. Obviously something's not put together correctly. Wish I could be more help.

Without removing anything they were able to fix the issue. They drove the car in 2nd gear and the transmission started working. This is what they told me. They drive the car for an hour and all gears shift fine.

I hope it's really fixed, because that sounds extremely fishy. As long as it works now and wasn't damaged, that's good news.
