Is there a way to fix the "dampening" feature on the center console doors (ashtray)?

I've been cleaning the interior of my project car (it's really gross) and I've noticed that the ashtray door opens so fast it pops the ashtray out. I've got the center console apart and separated the wood trim from the plastic. I washed all the parts in warm slightly soapy water to get all the PO's spilled pop out of the mechanism's as much as possible. I even washed the circuit board (with the LED) that lights up the ashtray and the cigarette lighter. There was so much sticky pop on everything that I could have re-constituted it into several "big gulps".
It looks like there is a small gear (with it's own tiny housing) that provides the damping feature. I'm gonna assume it's not something I can purchase from BMW as a separate part. I don't necessarily want to take that little housing apart since it's "staked" in place. The damping feature still works fine on the lighter but not on the ashtray.
I even took the center stack out to clean around everything. There was old, sticky pop all down the front of the console, including the MID buttons. I installed new cup holders while I had everything apart. They will never be used, ever! They are just there to fill the hole. Lol

Years ago, the dashpot on the CD player door broke off the little locating tabs, at the time a common failure. I was able to refasten it with some epoxy. It still works.

I don't see the dashpot in your pics, but you may be able to fasten it in a similar fashion.

My go-to is JB Weld.

It's not broken off, it just spins freely.

I totally get that. You save parts in case "some day" they are needed. As soon as you toss them out, they are needed. Been there many times. Lol...

The center console is all back together. It looks pretty good and I think that no one but me can tell the wood laminate is still a little warped. The cracks I made clamping it flat while it cures are hard to see now that it's in a more relaxed state again. Heck, I even washed the buttons (central lock and flashers). They were so gummed up with sticky pop that I had no choice but to throw them in the sink for a few seconds. I blew them dry and reinstalled them and they work fine.

IF I may piggyback on the OP topic, we have a similar situ with the same ashtray. Looks like soda has been spilled in there from PO's, and the lid won't stay shut and the ashtray keeps popping up. Our "mech" said something is broken in there, but I'm not convinced. I did take a swab and remove much of the goop and tried to clean the little gear, etc. Still the lid won't stay shut & ashtray keeps popping up. So I have a little piece of plastic wedged in there to keep the lid shut. Any ideas? thx.

I picked up an entire the mechanism/insert used on ebay. It's kind of one of those things you gotta keep searching for and eventually one will "pop up". My car was missing it completely when I got it. PO much have something installed in there, guessing a radar detector head unit.

Not familiar with your exact damper, but most rely on heavy silicone grease for the damping effect. If you find the little cylinder with a gear on it, see if it has any holes at all. If it does, get a syringe and squirt some fresh plumbers grease in the hole. You need high temp grease so it won't drip out on a hot day. Good luck
