Question Headlight Washers

I did a quick search, but didn't find anything.

The manual states that when the headlights are on and you activate the windshield washers, the headlight washers are also activated. I thought I had read somewhere that the headlight washers only come on if you hold the windshield washer lever for a few seconds. I used my windshield washers for the first time in the last week after the snow and although I only briefly pushed the washer switch, it appears the headlight washers activated because I saw several pulses of spray coming over the hood.

Is there supposed to be a delay before the headlight washers start spraying? If not it seems weird. I don't like the fluid spraying all over the place. (My prior C240 had a separate switch for the headlight cleaners)

If you are really quick, you can get a wipe and not get the headlight or windshield squirt... If you want a squirt on your window, 90% of the time you'll also get your headlights... but it only does it the first time you wash your window (with headlights on) and then every 5th time after that, IIRC...

I really like my headlight washers... they are actually required in Europe if you have Xenons...

Anyway, hope that helps...

Well, the manual did mention something cryptic about "reasonable intervals", so maybe that was their way of saying every 5 times . I literally pulled the wash lever for a split second but that's all it took for the headlight washers. OK, I'll try it again -- at least it seems they won't come on every time. I was thinking of shutting off the headlights for a second to disable the headlight washers and avoid the overspray.

That's funny because I was torn between the 2 alternatives. I surmised from the '05 brochure that the rear armrest only came with the folding rear seats and my sales person wasn't 100% sure so I went ahead and got ZCW instead of just the heated seats.

Yeah just press them slightly and it wont set off the headlight washers. A little practice and time and you will get this down in no time.

You're a lot more likely to use the ski pass-through in a sedan than I figured I would be in my cabrio.

I wish my headlight washers would work. Anyone have a trouble shooting sequence?

Wink

I live in Vermont and own a 2006 Passat with xenon lights and head light washers. We were about to by a second 2007 model, and discovered almost by accident that the head light washers were no longer available, even with the Xenon lights. I believe they are a necessity with these lights. We then started to look at BMWs, and now have a 335xi on order for ED in May; because of the headlight washers .

Not to be snarky, but I assume you have your headlights on? The washer won't work otherwise... and if you have auto-headlights, and its not dark, it may not consider them "on" as well...

Are you the original owner? Perhaps a previous owner disconnected them... Are the little doors popping open and the sprayers are sticking out, but just not spraying (turn on headlights, and have someone wash you windows while you stand in front of the car and look at the little trap doors below the headlights... if they don't pop open, either they are disconected or they are not getting the signal from the switch...

I just hate how much fluid the washer system consumes if you use the headlamp washers. Even with the gigantic tank on the X3, the low washer fluid light comes on too much during the winter time with all the road spray. It got so bad on our trip to Montreal, that if there were no cars around me, I'd turn the headlights off for a split second, hit the windshield washer, then turn the headlights back on to bypass the headlamp washer because the low fluid light was on. The road grime was so bad that not washing would have been dangerous, but I was already low on the precious fluid (with no Canadian Tire around until the next day).
