2014 528i Bad Engine Vibration when Cold - Engine Mounts?
Hi everyone - new here. I have a 2014 528i with 66K miles. When cold and only in drive, I have really bad engine vibration and it's getting worse. Once the car is fully warm, it does get better and is almost unnoticeable, but in the morning/winter time, it'll take a while to fully get warm so in the mean time, the whole car is rattling and shaking.
It only happens in drive and only cold. Not in park, not in neutral and not in reverse. Once I get past 20 mph or so, it goes away. Dealer has told me twice (the first time back at 51K miles) I need new engine mounts, but of course, that's not covered under the CPO and they quoted me $1,400. On occasion, I do feel/hear something kick in and it goes away or slightly gets better, but that's few and far between. Since it doesn't rattle in park, neutral, or reverse, engine mounts just don't sound right? Any ideas? Thank you Last edited by Ride Everything; 10-16-2018 at 05:42 PM. |

I would start with a transmission fluid change.
When my engine mounts became less firm (visibly I couldn't see anything on them) I was able to validate it by revving the engine in neutral and the car started heavily shaking in the 2200-2400 rpm area. Once I replaced them, this shaking went away.

This is from the "what's NOT covered" CPO pamphlet:
Quote:
This says to me that BODY mounts aren't covered, NOT engine mounts ("mounts" is in the body section, after all) . I would talk to the Service Manager and have him show you where the ENGINE mounts aren't covered.

Yeah, I saw that too, thanks. Maybe I'll try to call BMW (what ever the hell that number would be) and see what's going on. The SA definitely said "engine mounts". Thank you

Got the number so I'll call BMW tomorrow. I'll re-post what I find out in case it helps anyone. I'm still confused why it only vibrates in drive. I sort of understand why it doesn't in Park, but Reverse is buttery smooth. Seems it should vibrate all the time with bad engine mounts.
But what do I know! Thanks |

That's exactly what my car was doing. I have a 2015 528i. Once I got my engine mounts replaced the car stopped shaking.

Good to know, thanks. How many miles did you have on your car when you had them replaced? Curious if the warranty covered the fix. Thanks

I just got off the phone with BMW, of course they're saying it's not covered and it's mentioned in the Body section of the "What's not covered" under the BMW CPO. I told them, this isn't the body, it's the engine. Of course, they aren't going to do anything. I knew what I was getting into when I bought a used BMW, should have listened to my inner voice! |

I've seen it so many times at the dealer when I'm picking up a car. Guys buy these cars and expect the expensive warranty to cover some random module or panel and it doesn't.
Wish it was easier to buy these warranties. |

I had this happen to me on my 2012 528i. My car was at about 60k miles and I was 2 years out of the factory warranty, but I had Platinum ESC. BMW pulled the same thing on me, and said engine mounts not covered. The strange thing is they said it is covered if I had the Powertrain only warranty.. lol, but the platinum one doesn't cover it. I pointed out that the Mounts are listed in the Body section, but BMWNA said "We rely on service technicians expertise to determine warranty coverage", or some bullcrap like that and they didn't cover it. But the dealer did offer some sort of discount, but I think I remember paying something like $600-800 for them, not $1500.
The dealer showed me this something like this (if not exactly this): https://pictures.dealer.com/bmwofriv...aab1eeea54.pdf The BMW service advisors and tech rely on totally different verbiage and charts than the warranty book I had. In my opinion, the warranty booklet I got is the contract, so they should refer to that. This engine mount warranty coverage needs to be straightened out. |

Sorry to resurrect this old thread. However, I have an intermittent mild vibration in the front end of my car and a strange grinding sound emanating from my right front wheel. My indy says that both could be caused by bad engine mounts, and he wants to start there. He quoted me approximately $800 for the two mounts which seems reasonable to me based on what I have read. He also agreed to replace my rear differential bushing for $700 for a total of approximately $1,500 for both jobs. My fear is that after the mounts are replaced the grinding sound will still be there. I have two questions on which I hope some of you can advise.
1. Is replacing the engine mounts a relatively straight forward process, although it does take at least 4-5 hours of labor, or is it something more complex that a specially trained BMW technician needs to perform. 2. Any ideas on what the grinding sound might relate to? It can only be heard after the car reaches operating temperature, always when idling at a stop, then after driving to about 35-40 mph when it stops. Very annoying. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

I plan to do them myself, but whether you can or not will be dependent on your skill and tool set. You do have to brace the engine. But nothing that is crazy out of the ordinary. No idea on #2

I dont know where the 4-5 hours came from? Shop rates are always ridiculous. But then again, they have to pay to run a business.

Had both engine mounts replaced today by my indy. Original BMW parts and labor totaled $800.00. Both the vibration and grinding sound from my front right wheel well are resolved.

I have a very slight vibration while I'm staying, nothing while driving. I've had the dealer check my engine mounts and they reported that they are in a good condition. I started getting that vibration after I changed spark plugs/coils and air filter. Makes me think there some unmetered air or bad spark plug.

2014 528i owner @ 43k. Just started seeing the shaking about a month ago myself. Seems to be a common point of failure for this model or similar models after 4-5 years.
