Gas Cap Hatch Doesn't Lock

Hi all, noticed lately that my gas door is not locking when I use the fob to lock the car. All door locks are working fine, but I'll check the fuses anyway. If it's the gas cap hatch actuator motor, is it an easy, straight-forward job? TIA and TGIF all!

The actuator can be checked by removing the vertical trunk liner on the passenger side of the trunk. It could be bad. It merely snaps into place.

Just working the green manual release back and forth sometimes frees up the lock. It's the green plastic piece behind the rear passenger trunk liner above the battery compartment. You may have pushed the gas tank door closed after you had locked it and it can jam that way sometimes.

Step One for a failing filler-door lock: Clean and lubricate all accessible moving parts. The solenoid is not too powerful and may be unable to overcome the friction of a dirty plunger.

The youngest E46s are nearing 15 years of age. This is one of those components that most people never think to maintain, until it fails one day. Both my E46 and my (departed) E36 had balky actuators on arrival. A little TLC made them right as rain.

The best lubricant for jobs like this is Würth HHS-K. It's a penetrating grease designed to flow into tight spaces, then remain there as the carrier solvent evaporates.
