Valve cover gasket...How much RTV?

Planning on doing my first valve cover gasket replacement on my 2006 X3. I've heard 2 different opinions.
1. Only use RTV on the half moons and maybe a bit along the ridge before the vanos/timing chain

2. Butter the RTV along the entire gasket including the spank plug holes. Some say even butter it on either side of the gasket.
Since these valve covers are plastic, they tend to warp with heat cycles so RTV along the entire gasket is necessary to prevent leaks.

My car has 176,XXX miles so its been around the block a few times. What has been everyones experience? Also, go OEM or Elring?

Much appreciated!

1. I think most people would say go with 1 because I believe that is how BMW recommends it.

2. I read about too much RTV being used and it unknowingly drops into the engine and causes problems. If the valve cover was that warped I would replace it. I would see if it fits flush before installation.

3. Some donít use RTV at all. Supposedly works for them.

Is 2006 the one with the M54 engine? If so, yes half moons only and very lightly.

For the N52 engine, I did mine last summer and put zero RTV on it and it's not leaking.

The verdict is if you apply RTV and it still leaks then your valve cover is more than likely warped.
