2005 530i, iDrive problems

Hi,
My 2005 530i has been having problems with the iDrive for a while now. It started maybe a year ago when the screen began flickering, with horizontal lines running across. At first it would go back to normal after just a few seconds but it slowly began getting worse and worse. Now, there seems to be a pattern with when it works and doesn't. In the cold mornings this winter, it would start up and the radio would play like normal. It wouldn't work it the afternoon, or anytime after I turned off the engine. Now that it is warmer out, it almost never works. Screen is completely off. Also, I have recently noticed that every once in a while, the AC will switch to heat and then back to AC.

After reading things on this forum, I've decided to take a look at the MPM. It seems to be glued in and I was too afraid to rip it out mostly because I've never done any real work on my car. (Just oil changes, etc.) There are brown marks in the bottom of the spare tire well so I'm pretty sure there was some type of damage. Is the problem just the MPM or could it have led to further problems with the CCC that would also have to be replaced. I don't want to buy the MPM only for it to not work. Also, how exactly do I replace it? Disconnect the battery, then what. I really don't want to mess anything up.

Thanks for anything you may have.

Welcome. Since many first posters don't come back, stop by again and maybe we can help.

In the meantime, get a BMW compatible OBD reader. A cheap but comprehensive one is Foxwell 520 (BMW software), for about $140. You need to be able to read BMW codes in order to fix this kind of thing (unless you enjoy throwing parts at it). Good luck

Also, read the file referenced here: https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh...8&postcount=33
