Is the Off Road Package worth it?

I like the idea of the car being a little more capable off road, but I'm not sure I'm getting all that much for the extra $4k. I also prefer the look of the M kit.

My take on this is that with the extra $150 lift option, and manually putting the car in the right mode for the conditions I'm in, I can achieve the same off road result. Thoughts here?

X5 is in no way an off-road vehicle.

The logic: if one wants to go off road and one has 2-WD then one needs a LSD. If one has 2-WD and LSD then one needs 4WD. If one has 4WD then one needs a locking transfer case. If one has AWD then one needs a winch. If one has a winch then one needs a buddy with a winch. If you've got a buddy with a winch then it needs to be on a UNIMOG. If he's got a UNIMOG then borrow it and buy him a beer.

I realize that, but not really my question. Does the Off Road Package provide a material benefit to not having the Off Road Package? If so, what feature offers the greatest benefit? In my mind it's adding more height.

Also - does anyone know if the M package reduces the approach and exit angles, to my eye they're similar to the X-Line.

Thanks.

You have to look at what is in the whole package. If I remember, one fairly critical item is the skid plate(s?). Regardless of how much clearance you have, you don't want to be cracking or denting something critical underneath. A good skid plate can make a difference and having one with properly engineered attachment points is probably better than trying to do an aftermarket one. I haven't looked closely at the bottom of the x5. Get a list of what's included in the package if you don't have one.

Thanks.
The height comes from the air suspension which is available without buying the off-road package.

From what I can find, the off road package includes the following:
-two-axle air suspension,
-skid plates,
-a locking rear differential and
-multiple driving modes tailored for sand, rock, gravel or snow

So, the air suspension is available separately, but the other bits are not from what I can tell. Dedicated off-road vehicles can lock both ends, but doing the rear should help in many nasty situations with differential grip.
