E63 / E64 6 Series (2004 - 2010)
The E63/E64 BMW 6 Series builds on BMW's sporty heritage with aggressive lines and an incredible motor to back the design up. Available in coupe and convertible trims with a standard 4.8 liter engine producing 360 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque, the 6-series is a popular choice that exceeds expectations.

My top will rarely give the error, but in my case there is no correlation to heat or sun. It would manifest on a 70 degree fall night, most of my issues happened on temperature neutral conditions.

2008 650i Conv. Top won't go down

Discovered this when a dealer inspected the car for trade-in, much to my surprise (wife's car and she never puts it down). I did know that the trunk would not open and now I know they are related. Dealer wouldn't give me diddly for the trade-in because it would cost $6-8000 to fix!!! I find that hard to believe so I am taking to my out-of-warranty mechanic today and hopefully it will just be a sensor or something simple.

The dealer is quoting the price to install an entire new roof. Typical dealer mentality to just throw new parts at a problem rather then spend time fixing the problem.

If your indie is not familiar with the 6er "top not locked" problem have him print off the TSB - there is a link to it above in post #10.

Mein Auto: 650 2006 convertible
I just purchased a 2006 650 convertible with 38,000 miles. Drove with the convertible top down for the 4th time. Only had the car 3 weeks. Error message said top not completely down. Windows would not operate as well as trunk would not open. Called a BMW dealer I had used in the past and he recommended letting the car sit for 1/2 hour and having the computer reset. I bought the car from Paul Miller Porsche in Parsipanny NJ and called them and they put me in touch with one of the service guys. He told me about the sensors.

I thought I figured out where they were. A little tough getting my 6 ft body in the back, but the description with post 120 really helped.

I went back out and the top windows and trunk works. However it was over the half hour, but I am betting on the sensors based on the other things I have read on this site.

Thanks a lot.

Jim

The good news is that you know where they are now, so you won't need to squeeze into the back any more. It is an easy reach from the front. It wasn't the 1/2 hour, it was the sensor press.

You'll probably need to reset the window adaptions by pressing and holding the window button down, let it get to the bottom and keep holding it for a further 5 or so seconds, do the same when winding the window back up.
If its the front passenger window and its still not right you'll need to adjust the window which is done by winding the window down all the way, then at the bottom of the door there two grommets (one square and one oval if I remember right), you'll need to trial and error it but adjust each one, they are hex screws so turn both the same amount until your close and then adjust front and rear as needed, you will need to do the adaptions again after adjusting it.
If it's the rear (and bare with me here as I have a coupe so trying remember what I've read) you'll need to remove the side trim and there are two screws that need to be slackened (not removed) then a third in the centre that does the adjustment similar to that mentioned above.
It may even be that they're trying to go up too high and need backing down a bit.

I've seen a TIS for this so I'll try and find it.
