To the OP or really high mileage posters (200k), engine wear actually does become a potential issue at those miles. Essentially, things are looser than they used to be due to wear and tear. Not necessarily a bad thing.

But one thing I'd recommend is to consider going to a thicker oil than usual, or a Heavy Duty Engine Oil, that provides a greater film strength. Mobil One 0w40 is a good choice to minimize additional wear during start-up.

Hahaha. If someone manages to get an E39 to a million miles, I think BMW should rebuild the engine for free.

+1 When the stock motor sees 200k+ miles,, I'd look at 15w-40, Mobil 1 Truck & SUV oil. Hi mileage cars need the thicker viscosity to improve ring seal and to improve oil pressure due to worn rod bearings. You'd be using an oil that isn't an energy conserving oil thus will lose some fuel economy, but the motor will run smoother and quieter.

I agree with using 15w40....in texas. Up here in the northeast, a 5w40, 10w40, or 5w50 (hard to find) would be my preferences.

Here's a link to Mobil One 5w50: http://www.mobil.com/Australia-Engli...bil1_5W-50.asp

Lots of good choices. Alot of BMW people don't like using oils without specific BMW approvals. One thing I'll point out though is that just because an oil doesn't have a BMW approval, doesn't mean that it's not BETTER at protecting your engine than an oil with that approval.

That makes no sense whatsoever. What is 20709 K? Anyway, not to digress that mileage is a great feat and a testimony to good maintenance. Netjazz, how many miles did it have when you got it- out of curiosity?

Can't even come close, but my uncle had an old 2002 BMW that hit just over 280,000 miles befor he sold it a couple years back. He knows the guy yet, so I'll ask my uncle to give him a call to verify current miles!

I have a 1998 528i with 211000 miles. it runs very smooth. I had some cooling system issues with it. put a fan clutch and a Tstat. Bleeding it was crazy. The engine sounds really good. doesnt burn any oil. I am obssesed with this car. I want to get at least another 20000 miles out of it. I am taking it for a full inspection this weekend to see what it needs.

I know what you mean about keeping this as a second car and not some Honda or Toyota. Keep going! Thats my plan! Why 400,000??? I would say 500,000 is a nicer number. Then you can sell it to BMW museum and they will give you a brand new M5 in exchange

Anyway, CHEERS!
Wow! Look at my post from 12/19/2004 !

I am at 198,xxx right now. Looking closely not to miss the moment of the 200,000 miles!

I saw 318,xxx on one of my customers cars. He brought the car in for a clutch job. The car ate some oil, but ran pretty good. I couldn't believe that he had racked up so many miles. When I first saw the car, I thought it had about 120k, but when I got inside to pull it inside the shop I was surprised that it had so many miles.
