My plan was to remove the transponder from the old key (works for starting engine, but not for doors) and install it in the new key (works for doors but not for starting engine).

The dealer wants USD$250 to program a factory key. I bought mine online for $15, but the transponder needs programming to allow it to start the engine. A local lock shop will do it for $200.

My new $15 key works fine for locking/unlocking the doors, and my old key works fine for starting the engine. I may simply carry both keys; not an elegant solution, but will work.

Thanks for your suggestions,

Ron
The programmed part of the transponder is not passive, it gets powered by the antennae ring when put in the ignition - RFID.
I see a couple of your posts about making the new key start the car, what about making the old key remote functions work?
Another option would be get a valet key from the dealer.

AK-90 is only about $40 on eBay or Amazon, remove your EWS which is under the driver side dash, program the key with AK-90 is quite easy and you can get more keys cut and programed, just search youtube, there are many videos demonstrating how to program BMW keys, I have done 2 keys, replaced battery on my original keys now I have 3 working master keys.

On the 9/99 build date-up remote key...it is the new style and the EWS trasnponder is soldered to the IC board inside the key. The older style remote key's EWS transponder is on an embeded chip that can be easily transferred...as well as the non remote keys (transponder is an embedded chip).

If you're new remote key purchased online was a blank key blade and has a body/case that can be opened...as someone mentioned...you could purchase one of the inexpensive (plastic head and key blade) valet keys using your VIN to have it ordered...then remove it's EWS transponder and place inside the body case of your new online remote key. That would be much easier (and 99.9% successful) versus trying to desolder the transponder off your existing remote key and resolder it onto your new remote key.

The transponder chip inside the old style remote and all the non remote keys looks like the one in the pic below...it can be removed and inserted into another key much more easily:

{the small highlighted rectangle shows the location of the EWS transponder inside the keys below}

Thanks for the tip; I found one on Amazon for $30!
How can dealers justify charging $200 to program a key?

They don't actually "program" the key at the local dealership. You get a new remote key (or regular key) with the blade cut correctly (based on your VIN) and a transponder chip programmed with your car's ISN (again, based on the VIN as the car came off the assembly line). They new key will have the next identification number in line that will be one of the original 10 that was programmed into your EWS control module...when it came off the assembly line.

The local dealership doesn't program the key...they order it (based on your VIN) from a regional or national BMW center/HQ...which then sends it to the dealer...which then sells it to you. $$$

Take note of the paragraph titled FIRST TIME INITIALIZATION AT THE PRODUCTION PLANT in the BMW info below:
