I'd bet the sensor is bad. Check for codes?

Better check the dip stick.

That's not the error it shows when it's still calculating though. It should show a clock symbol under the level meter while the car is still warming up.

Mine gave the inactive when my pan gasket was leaking, cleaned all the oil out of it and started working again.

Read all about what the oil condition/level sensor does [here]

Note the last paragraph - if self test fails and error code is stored, read it with [this]
