Error:Fuel system: Drive moderately Fuel supply: Full drive performance not available

Hi All,

I tried to start my car this morning and got this error message on Check Control reading:

Error: Fuel supply:
Full drive performance not available
Check Control reading: Fuel system: Drive moderately

The car will turnover and start up but then go off immediately. Feels like I'm out of gas. I just filled up the day before, so full tank. When I tried to start it again, it just turns over now. Only good thing about that is it seems like battery is still strong.
I thought I'd check with you guys first before I have it towed in.
Could the gas I put in be bad? I don’t think I could siphon out 20 gallons of gas safely.

Any ideas? Some folks said they had it towed in, and then it started after coming off trailer. . So, if I could just get it started and drive it to dealer would be nice. Thanks.

Here is what I've researched so far on things to try and possible fixes:
1. Software issue: Reprogram
2. Faulty low-pressure sensor
3. Turn off, get out, set alarm, got back in, and try to start it.
4. Replaced some boards which were out of tolerance (hardware/software)
5. Replace low-pressure fuel pump
6. Found DME software error with faults stored for low pressure fuel sensor and current of fuel control module...resolved by updating DME software
7. Diagnostics recommended cleaning and re-fitting fuel system connection. Removed rear seat to test voltages and cleaned connections on fuel pump. Cleared faults and road-tested vehicle, no fault evident.
8. If software issue only:
Here are notes from repair slip:
a) Software error. Hooked to ISID.
b) Faults 481B02-control
c) Current fuel pump control too high
d) 1F0201-DME Internal Fault
e) Test plan results show to reprogram/code EKPS Control Module
f) Programmed complete vehicle with software version 41.2.0.1
g) Initialized TPMS and sunroof. Test drove and rechecked. Fault has not returned.
h) GWCODE: 70222219
i) DIAGCODE: D1330 EKPS0000 90 211

I just got my car back from BMW dealer. It ended up being the battery. Hard for me to believe, but I'll go with it for now. The car turned over and started, then conked out with the fuel warning.

One thing I learned is you can't put the car in neutral, if you can't start it. That's just crazy. Yeah, you can try to jack car up, take off transmission cover and turn the screw, but no way I'm doing that, as I don't have any true lifts in my garage. So I went through a couple of tow companies that couldn't get it on their flat bed. I finally found another tow company who had one of these tow trucks with dollies:

Thanks for reply. The BMW dealership service guy told me it was underneath the car. But this looks like I should have it. I will check it out when I get my car back.

Yes, my car is back in the shop today. I stalled out on busy road with same fuel error. I blocked traffic for over an hour. I was able to start car for a split second and slam it into neutral. Some guys stopped and helped me push over to the side of road.

I'm not a happy camper to say the least, especially after I showed them all my research and I don't believe it was the battery. Fun Fun..I have a lot of battles ahead.

Thanks again for the neutral tip. I'll report back on that and any resolution to the fuel error.

Best wishes.

It is your BMW, one among millions and that you paid for, so you must know it and love it better than any idiot mechanic or recovery driver.

If the circumstances turn out that you DO NOT have the link beneath your front cup holders as in the info Doug H posted above (because I think BMW changed this set up sometime in the early build years of the F chassis models)...then your manual release of the transmission requires following the instructions pictured below. The big thing to remember about the instructions below is that it still requires electrical power...BUT...the car has to NOT start...so it may require pulling the fuel pump's fuse if your engine turns over and starts (go figure ):

I looked for precisely those instructions for this car but couldn't find them. I have them printed and in my owners manual that is the only permanent resident of my glovebox. Thanks

DH...I don't know why they made it so hard to find the manual/electronic release instructions in the TIS...especially since a lot of owners input their vehicle info and find the instructions for the cup holder removal instructions...then find out the release mechanism doesn't exist on their cars.

I "stumbled" upon these instructions after numerous threads on this topic where owners tried removing the cup holder and nothing was there to release the tranny. After multiple searches and clicking on additional links on this topic in the TIS...I ran across the instructions I posted above and made sure I made a copy to my pic stash (for safety)!

I did find I have the under cup holder release to engage in neutral without starting. I figured out what allen wrench size and ordered on amazon to put in glove box. My car takes this size: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GAUW2K..._uVQ2EbRTKATXC
Whats funny is I produced what Doug Huffman posted here to the local Dealer. Comical they had no clue how to put it in neutral. No one there!

Thanks again Doug!!!

For reference my car is Vin# 2016 BMW M6 Coupe “Competition Edition” (not the package, but edition) 62/100 made for USA (a.k.a. "White Ghost").
Series: F13
VIN# WBS6J9C59GD934625

Follow-up to Error:Fuel system: Drive moderately Fuel supply: Full drive performance

Here is my follow up to posting chain below for Error: "Fuel system: Drive moderately Fuel supply: Full drive performance not available" (in case someone is googling this like I did – I hate people that come to forums and get help and never post follow-up or resolution i.e. "Only Me World"
I just got back my car a couple of days ago. Read posts/story below for detail fiasco. :C)

So, they ended up replacing the fuel pump. Because of inconvenience they comped it (I'm out of warranty). I paid for battery only which wasn't the issue. It does help when they pull your name up and you have owned 16 BMW since 1987. But always try to get comp. Don't pay anything over $2500 without a fight. Just do due diligence, produce info, and known issues with car.
Here is service ticket if you have this issue: Please know that this may not be the solution. So far, a few days its good. I will post back if this was not the resolution. Thanks all!

Thanks for the follow up...and hopefully the fuel pump replacement fixed the issue. It was nice of them to provide “goodwill”...especially since they mis-diagnosed the issue the first time...plus you educated them on how to manually put the car into neutral. (HA!).
