Odometer and trip odometer suddenly in kilometers - how to switch back?

So my high OBC instrument cluster suddenly changed from miles to km. (This is in my 2006 e53, but not much action in the x forum, and it's the same cluster, so I'm asking here...)

This is not the fuel consumption - still in miles, nor the temperature - still in F, not C.

Not sure how it happened, but can't find out how to switch back.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Google search "E39 switch from kilometers to miles"...I just checked and many, many threads some up with simple instructions for switching back and forth. I've accidently done it in the past when resetting the service monitor and had to figure out how to switch it back

IIRC it is similar to changing the temp display using the trip odometer button and ignition. Because that is also how you reset the service monitor, and how I messed mine up to read KMs and freaked me out...after much fiddling I got it back to reading miles

See answer seven, you change it on the MID.

Wow - spelling correction on this tablet sucks... Edited post below.

Thanks, but answer says that I need proprietary software to change the cluster from km to miles. I didn't do any programming to change it from miles to km. I'd be willing to do programming (I have software and cable, if I knew what to do...).

Any ideas?

PASoft I guess, look at answers here, maybe especially answer 15.

Did you try letting the car go to sleep and then disconnect the battery for ten minutes. Dont wake up the car before disconnecting.
I would just pass by a dealer and ask them to fix it....

Thanks - I have the nav head unit, so it's a little different. Changing in the head unit changes the consumption and miles remaining, but not the odometer or trip odometer.

I am looking to change the odometer and trip odometer...

Can you EDIT what you wrote in the quote above to make it more understandable? I can't figure out some of the things you're trying to tell us. Thanks.

The image below shows how to check the instrument cluster (the IKE) to see how the IKE has been coded to display the mileage (using PA Soft). Take note of the far left column titled STANDARDS...you can see the box checked off under mileage for "MILES" vs "KILOMETERS":

thanks for your answer, I will hook up Pa soft and see what it says.

Here is what I meant to type:

I tried the battery nap - no love. I checked PA Soft - everything was metric, so I changed the 3 - temp, consumption and mileage - to US measures and wrote the IKE module. That corrected the mileage - yay!

Now the time/date /consumption data in the OBC reading in the cluster don't work (do not show) on cycling the button. Also, can't change the units in the nav head unit - both metric and Us units show, but they are locked too US. They did previously. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

OK, figured it out. Seems that doing a battery nap clears the programming for the OBC, had to go back into PA Soft and change string from No Display to Bordmonitor.

Thanks for your help!

Just an FYI for the future (or others that may not know)...you don't need any aftermarket software to restore the OBC features to be displayed in the instrument cluster's Check Control Display.

In order for any OBC features to be displayed in the cluster...they have to be programmed to appear there...because the display has first priority to the check control system. To program (or re-program) OBC features into the cluster's check control display...press & hold the BC button on the tip of the turn indicator stalk. You should see PROG appear in the display. If you have NAV...then the nav screen will display all the OBC options. You can select any that you want or select ALL. If you make individual selections...they will appear (when you press the BC button) in the order that you select. When finished...select the MEMORIZE button. If you have the MID...then you make the selections on the MID in the order you prefer...then press the SET button.

I pressed and held the BC button - it didn't do anything until I went back into PA Soft and chose Bordmonitor is the Box display option. Then the OBC options showed up, and we're chooseable in the Nav screen and the cluster.

Interesting...and thanks for that update. Perhaps this (the BC button's) inability to initiate the PROG of the cluster's display is connected to the sudden change of the odometer from miles to kilometers. If everything stays in working order...that'll be great. But if it occurs again, then you'll know that there's something else going on. Fingers are crossed that everything stays in order.

The indicator arm is known to fail on the e39, some are lucky though.
