318i with the N43 Engine is burning oil

Hello everyone!

I have a low mileage E90 (80.000kms) which started to need a lot of oil about 1 year ago. It uses about 1L/1500 km.
I am assuming it's burning it, as yesterday I got an 29F4 CO Catalytic converter error and I bet it's because the oil goes in the exhaust.

Is there anybody who owns a car with this engine and had the same problem?

The mechanic said the valve stem seals need replacing, but he didn't do any tests and I am a bit afraid to agree to such a complicated job without being sure they are indeed faulty.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Is the car throwing up any codes, I am pretty sure if you are burning oil it should present itself. If you have emissions testing in ROM you should fail that if you are burning oil but that is a double edged sword in that if you fail it may generate some kind of repair order or something.

Hello and thank you for your reply! The only code it's showing is the 29F4- CO Catalytic converter below threshold so I'm assuming it's indeed burning it. But I have no idea what may be at fault. I am blaming the valve stem seals or piston rings, but I haven't found a mechanic that can test them and come with a decent answer.
