What is this little red light?

What is this little red light for in 1999 Z3 convertible? I can't find it anywhere in the manual. I haven't seen it come on yet. Looks like there may be a small push button next to it but it doesn't seem to do anything. It may just be a filler plug the the little red diode looks to be a light for something.

Indicator for the BMW Alarm (I did a self-install when I bought my '98 way back in 1998).

Most alarms have a little LED light that blinks when the alarm is armed. My OEM alarm does. Do you have an alarm?

Also, the OEM alarm has a glass break sensor next to the light. Is it possible that is what your "button" is?

Thanks for the responses. I do have a red alarm light in my radio that blinks off and on when I lock the car. This one hasn't lit up for me yet.

The radio light is different. It just means the radio is protected by an alarm. Just locking the doors with the key doesn't turn on the alarm, you need to use the key fob.

OH! I was told when I purchased the car last week that that blinking red light was the car alarm. The radio doesn't work but the alarm light blinks. My 1999 Z3 has the remote keyless-entry installed from new but the previous owner's wife lost the key fob. So, if your right I actually don't have a car alarm that works. Damn...

Now all you need is the fob. I think you can still get them, but I don't know the details. Once you get it, it will need to be set to work with your car.

I read somewhere that you need your old fob to be able to program a new one. I don't know if that's true or not but I'm trying to find out.

I am also curious, when I bought my 96 z3 out had a red light between the heated seat buttons but it never comes on, I don't have a fob but would consider getting one of it is possible to program without the old one, not sure money had the keyless entry or not, would be happy if it did, is there any way to check,,?

I took pictures of the back & front of my 1998 Z3's Remote FOB - the ##'s might help you locate a replacement. I installed mine when I bought my Z3 in June of 1998 so it's been a while - I don't recall needing to do any exotic programming to get it to work.

I am sure I have my original alarm-remote entry manual and can try to get it when I have time to get to the garage where it's stored between drives.

Thanks I have the keyless entry manual. I think all is setup to use the system if I can find a key fob. The only thing that seem to be missing (other than the fob) is there doesn't seem to be any alarm siren installed under the hood. I found what we think is the electrical connection for the alarm siren but no siren? Someone mention that maybe my car uses the horn instead?
