Overheating light came on

I have a 2011 328 xdrive, I was driving last night for over a 2 hours and the overheating light came on and went away in seconds; then it came on again but this time it was on red and went away in a matter of seconds
Next day I checked my coolant level and it was ok but I noticed that my radiator fan came on after 3 minutes of driving
Just today I drove for just 10 minutes and the light came on again

What could it be

Scan it with a BMW scanner. See what fault codes you have.

Not dismissing any of the previous suggestions, failing water pump is very common but be aware that the overheating warning symbol can be displayed for one of two reasons so if you don't get any water pump RPM deviation errors check your oil system.

Yellow:
1. Coolant temp has reached 120C
2. Oil temp has reached 156C

Red:
1. Coolant temp has reached 125C
2. Oil temp has reached 161C

Your car will start to shutdown items like AC and then reduce power in increments and then go into limp mode if the oil or coolant temp exceeds the thresholds.

System Protection
In the event of the coolant or engine oil being subject to excessive temperatures while the engine is running, certain functions in the vehicle are influenced so that more energy is made available to the engine-cooling system, i.e. temperature-increasing loads are avoided.
These measures are divided into two operating modes:
1. Componentprotection
2. Emergency
