Fuel pump is in fuel tank.
which motor do you have.
The N51 fuel tank is noted to have problems with the
Internal hoses to the Fuel pump self disconnecting or breaking.
BMW wants to change the tank when this happens.
Fuel Pump is in the gas Tank.

Lots of thread on the N51 fuel tank problem here and on the internet.
They had the same problem on the e46 for that sulev version.

Thank you for your response. It is an N51 engine. I have a 2011 328 i sulev x drive Was this a recall by BMW?

When I researched this before the recall did not include my vehicle.

Does anyone know of any good mechanics in Maryland to do a fuel pump replacement? if this cost has to be ansorbed by me.

Check with a local dealer to see if they will cover it under the Sulev warranty.
You can see what the guy in the thread where we tried to tell him what the problem
was did . I think he started another thread on his repair effort.
The fuel pump itself is not the problem its the gas lines inside the tank.

There is something PECULIAR to the N51 tank & Fuel Pump Plumbing that requires replacement of the ENTIRE tank in certain instances I have read. I do NOT recall the specifics.

There is a warranty on SOME SULEV components for ~ 10 years or ~150,000 miles, but it is ONLY applicable in SOME states. I don't have an N51 SULEV and don't know all the terms of the warranty: what is covered, what is excluded, where the vehicle was first sold, what happens if you are NOT the original owner or it is purchased in a different state from where originally sold, etc.

I would suggest posting as many of the details that relate to that and someone in MD with an N51 hopefully can help. I would also search this forum and E90Post for N51 Warranty threads. Dealers being Dealers, I would try to get as much of the legal documentation as you can FIRST before you talk to your local Dealer. If you bought directly from a Dealer, then he should have provided you with N51 Warranty information.

AFAIK, this is NOT an NHTSA recall, so BMW NA & Dealers are basically just trying to maintain Customer Goodwill, and NOT forced to comply with a Federal Gov't Mandate, but my impression there MAY be incorrect.

ANYONE with any info on N51 Warranty, please supply references. I would suggest go to this site and get vehicle information: BMWUSA.com Register as New Owner (Get Recall Info, etc.):
