How do I know which engine I have?

I know its elementary to most of you. I tried searching but the query must have been too common. How can I tell if my 2008 328xi has the N52 or any other number?

Thank you! I forgot all about that. Used it when I was shopping for mine.

Usually what I do is a VIN search at http://bimmer.work. That said, your car should have the N52.

Many 328's came with the N52 but a lot have the N51. A quick look for the air pump (circled in red) will tell you it is a N51.

Thanks. I'll have to double check. I was just checking out something I saw in the local bMW dealership preowned lot. It's a 2011 with an N 51. I will investigate online, but if someone could tell me the key difference (s) between the two?
Thanks. !!!

Well, the N51 is SULEV rated for states with the CA emissions standard. You're in NY and if the car in question with the N51 was originally registered in NY (or one of the other SULEV states such as NJ, MA, etc.), you get the extended emissions warranty on many of the SULEV emissions parts (including things as surprising as the fuel tank). It's a ridiculous number (15 yrs / 150k miles) on some of the components.

I know there are some intake differences, and the compression ratio is somewhat lower in the N51. In the E46 series, there was a noticeable performance difference between the SULEV and standard engines. From what I remember reading online, this difference was eliminated in the E90 series, at least at the "butt dyno" level.

If you're into DIY, a number of the N51 engine parts are different, so you need to be careful when ordering online.

Got it! Found another forum Thanks . I guess the SULEV(51) was produced for the States with more stringent emissions requirements. Similar build, output. Pretty insignificant unless your doing mods. I wont/cant lol. Thanks.
