335xi cheap

Hello everyone. This is my 2nd time posting on here. Iíve always wanted a bmw or Mercedes and just purchased a Mercedes wagon (wife won the argument). So I found a 2011 335xi w/120k miles on it. Extremely clean car with brand new tires. Iím picking it up in the morning however, it has an engine knock. I do not know much about it except it sounds like a belt slapping the underside of the hood. Iím buying this cheap, and I know itís a gamble, but I think Iím doing the right thing (wife disagrees). Iím sure more info is needed but any thoughts on known issues. It has been serviced at the dealer pretty much itís entire life. Iím not sure if it can be repaired, or a replacement engine is in order. Iíll know more tomorrow morning. Thank you

If it indeed has a rod knock, I hope youíre getting the car for free because the fix will not be cheap. Diagnosing a rod knock is often more of an art than a science and an experienced mechanic can do it by feel. A mechanics stethoscope can help. A rod knock typically has a deep, guttural sound to it; is the sound present at idle, disappear under load, and reappear under no load when the engine comes back down to idle?

There are other sources of similar noises; my E46 had a ďknockĒ that was due to a loose belt tensioner.

If the noise is lighter ticking from the top end, likely is a lifter issue (wrong oil will due this).

Examine the oil for glitter, glitter doesnít lie.

And of course, check that the belt isnít actually ďslappingĒ anything.

Happy wife, happy life. A 335 can be a very expensive car to maintain due to the turbos.

Given the choice, I'd rather have the BMW over the Merc due to Mercs predatory practices.......

I just got home with the car. The noise or knock us definitely coming from the upper or top part of the engine. That's all I have figured out for now. I don't have time to dig into it right now. It'll be a few weeks before I can mess with it. We're trying to get into a new home. I'll update when I know more. Thank you for the replies.

How cheap we talking about? If it's knocking then most likely your engine has a spun bearing! Hints why they sold you the car cheap!

If itís knocking front the top end, you at east should be able to get away with only pulling the head.

Do an oil change. When I got my E83 back it knocked like an SOB, but when I drained the oil molasses came out despite 1 mile being on the oil. The shop that did it for my renter used horribly wrong oil. A quart of MMO and proper oil cured that. Weíre now 30k miles later.

The big thing is 1) correct notice of the noise 2) correct description of the noise 3) correct interpretation of the description of the noise. Iíll posit that a knock from the top end is NOT a spun or worn main or rod bearing.

Worn cam or valve...? It would have to be something that the previous owner was aware of and the reason to why it was sold cheap! Couldn't fix it himself and found it would be expensive to fix? Just speculation from my part..

Any number of things, from valvetrain components (like worn cam phaser) to loose accessories to loose flexplate bolts. Even wrist pins. A mechanics stethoscope is invaluable.

Marvel mystery oil has brought back to life, and quieted, many an engine. Just sayiní.
