+1. And the short commute's probably not helping.

I get 19MPG on hwy/city mix with the V8. You should be getting a lot better.

Cars not getting up to operating temp--thats bad on gas mileage---take a 50 or even better 100 mile trip and see what you come up with--also the 02 sensors will be more sluggish for giving the right readings as they get older--BMW says to change them(the ones before the cats) at 100k miles.
Hope that helps

that sucks! ..what can i do my jobs so close ..i have no choice i know my car doesnt get up to full temp ..i try and try to take the longer way to work but still doesnt cut it ..my car idles great and runs really smooth tho
but ..i do notice its kinda sluggish at times like it could have better acel or power ..which makes me think the o2's

i know its better to do all of them ..but $ is tight ...any major ones that could do it ?
like the pre-cats ..etc etc?

You need a 540 Sport suspension.

OR:

1). Fuel Filter
2). Air Filter
3). 6 Spark Plugs
4). Two (2) Pre-Cat 02 Sensors
5). Clean the MAF Sensor
6). Check air pressure in tires

Whatever you've done on the list, skip. But really, you have a 2 mile drive to work? You're giving us results/data based on a 4 mile spread? CLEAR the mpg function, drive on the highway and get real data.

I say you get the 540 Suspension.

Don't wory about what the obc says your getting on a 2 mile drive--it's not reality--where the real world is and should be, is what your getting on the road and what the cars mileage is showing after it's at operating temp-----to change what your experincing now I would suggest you get a job which is further away.

Had the same problem with my 528 when it was nearing 100K miles. Turned out to be a sign that the CPS was going bad.

Dude.... the engine holds 7 quarts of oil and your changing it every 3k with expensive synthetic. Overkill and a big waste of money, IMHO. So why worry about fuel economy with 4 miles a day??? Just enjoy your ride. You will never get economy with that 2 mile commute.

By the way, your jealous of us at 20 mpg... imagine how some of us feel with your 2 mile commute to work!!

You are changing your synthetic oil as if it is a mineral oil. Change your oil in the middle of your service lights, and at the end of the lights. That's twice the recommended schedule.

You said you have 15mpg. You didn't say what kind of drive. Do you think its important? Is it in NYC? is it highway? Are you nailing it? Are you driving like grandma? Saying "15mpg" means nothing.

i get 17 city nailing it, even with long drives, but i get 30 mpg highway. If i purposley drive slow / never use 1st gear / accelarate like a slug, i can get 20 city but 15 is pretty bad,

Mainly, your not driving far enough to get accurate readings. I can reset my MPG readout and driving around for a couple of miles and it says im getting 11.5 MPG.

keep in mind i drive short trips..and 3000 miles is like 5-6months time span

Dude, you need to read the Owner's Manual of your car. If not, get one from Bavauto. Dig into it, read it front to back and keep it. People overlook their Owner's Manual as a waste of time etc, it's not.

Imho, looking at a 540 suspension, whether it's free, new, old, installed free...it's a waste of time. Remember, Ben Franklin said, "Never confuse action with motion".

Grab the Owner's Manual as soon as you can.

15.4mpg in Queens? You should kiss your car hood every morning, hug it's seats, then turn you key in, and wisper sweet thank yous to the cluster. This kind of mpg is fantastic in Queens, where you spend more time standing in the red light, than driving the next 200 feet to the next red trafic light. I live in Queens too.

^^ +1. I have the same situation; mostly red lights in my area, and I also have about a 2mi drive to work- 15-16mpg. You folks in NYC actually have it worse with the 'no turn on red' law. The price we pay for living in the city. But when I'm out of town, the mileage climbs to a more appropriate range. I'm at 102k myself and I agree that replacing the precat O2's should help.

I know you 540/M5 owners find it hard to relate to us lowly 6 cylinder 528 owners so I'll give my two cents... on MPG that is.

I drive anywhere between 46+ miles a day for work and I average 22-24mpg. Mostly highway but I would say 6 or so miles is city miles.

When I suddenly found my lead foot (yes, us 528 users have one too) I still ranged from 19-20mpg for that adventure.

I'd take 15-16mpg a day if my commute was only 2 miles...But it still doesn't make sense why it would be so low.

+420 on the pre-cat o2 sensors. Your car will run better and you should see an uptick (although probably small) in mileage. They are e-z to change too...did mine in 30 minutes due to one hand holding a beer most of the time.
