Factory Tint Percentage

I just picked up my 08 with privacy glass. I had a state trooper use a light meter to measure the light transmission of the glass.

The rear factory privacy glass came out to be 43% which was darker than I expected, I guess it just looks light when I've had 20% for 7 years.

The interesting thing was that the front windows measured 71% which I figured was more like 90%.

So when you put 20% on "clear" glass you really end up with 14.2% LTV.

I'm thinking about putting 28% film on the rear to bring it to 12.04% and putting 18% film on the front to bring it to 12.78%. In theory this should match, but I'm worried it will look weird

People have said that 35% on the front will match the rear privacy glass, but 35% film added to 71% glass comes out to about 25% which is darker than the rear at 43%

I know that in theory properly-applied quality tint isn't ever supposed to bubble off the windows, but I see it like that so often in the hot states that I'd never add aftermarket tint to any car I owned...

Congrats on the purchase though!

Quality tint installed by the right person has no problems..

My question is about if my theory of adding 18% film to the "clear" front windows which really are 71% LTV will be the same as putting 28% on the rear privacy glass at 43%

35% front matches factory privacy

I have an 08 X-3 and had 35% tint applied to the front side windows, and it is about as close to a match to the rear privacy glass as I can imagine. Have exactly the same thing on my 04 X-5, and again, a perfect match to my undiscriminating eye.

One more thing, I have had aftermarket tint on the last 6 or 8 cars I have owned and have NEVER had any problems of any sort. I live in Texas, and I'd say it gets just about as hot here as anywhere! Just have it done by someone who knows what they are doing and don't try buying it at Wal-Mart and doing it yourself.

Good luck, Bob

I am just used to having 15% ceramic on my last car that 35% is going to be weird. The privacy glass isn't really dark enough but its better in that it won't show the tint on the dot matrix on the rear.

I'm thinking about just doing the 35% front to make things easy and it should match. The thing is I can't understand how it's not darker since I had a cop use the light meter and he got 43% on the privacy glass..35% is already darker than that, let alone the front windows came out at 71%...putting 35% film on the front should theoretically make the front windows 24.85%
