Soon-to-End Free Maintenance Warranty

I posted this question at roadfly, too, but with that being a
coupe board and this being a more general Z3 board, I
thought it would be worth trying here, also, since the
audience might be wider and the issues could apply to both.

I have a 2001 M Coupe and the free maintenance warranty is expiring this January. I've had the car for a year, but
with the low miles when I got it, it's only got 9300 on it
now. I've taken care of some issues like the rear wiper,
but I was looking for some ideas on possible things I might
check in the hopes of "squeezing" them in under warranty.
I've tried to follow the common problems and symptoms,
but may have missed some. And although I don't notice
any obviously right now, maybe some of you might be able to give some hints like "get under the car and look at such
and such and if you see such and such, there's a good
chance it's common problem x starting, so you should see
if they'll fix that."

The maintenance warranty just covers the free service (oil changes, Inpection I, etc.). You'll still have the manufacturers warranty for another year if anything breaks.

First '01 coupes were built in May of '01. Why is yours expiring in January '04?

To make sure when it expires ask the dealer for the DCS report on your car. You should get it at no cost and everything is listed there clearly.

You know, I've thought it couldn't be so early myself. I have
confirmed it with BMW, so I know it is, but I thought it was kinda early,
too. When I bought the car, the salesman was giving me some story
about it being a factory "demo" type car and implying it was used as
one to show dealers, but I thought he was just doing the salesman thing.
The logbook does have some service stamps in German, though, so that
seemed a bit odd, implying it was in Germany at some point. Is there a
simple way to tell with the VIN how early it is? Or is there a build date
on it somewhere (I know some of my old cars have this, but can't
remember if new ones do)?

Thanks, Randy. My dealer has been really vague for some reason with
warranty explanations, and I didn't understand this part. That does
give me some more peace of mind because that should give me time
to get more miles on the car. Yeah, it was "nice" finding a 2 year old
car with only 1900 miles on it, but it certainly put me behind-the-curve
in terms of putting miles on it to try to work out all the "kinks" before
I have to start paying out of my own pocket.

Ask for the DCS on the car. I am serious. In fact I would not buy a BMW without seeing that first. It will tell you the whole car history from BMW point of view (warranty work, where etc). If your dealer does not want pull the report for you, find another one. I can also help you with that if you do not mind giving me the VIN number.

Open the driver's side door and look at the door jamb. There will be a build date on the sticker. I believe it's in mm/yy format (for example, 05/01, or something like that).

I finally remembered to check the door sticker - it does say it
has a build date of 01/01, so I guess they built some earlier.
Doesn't really make any difference in the long run, but maybe
a bit of trivia for the group?? I'm sure there must be some
others, just don't know if they're on this board.

On the EPC LK60000 comes up as 04/2000 production date.
LK60011 comes up as 09/2000.
LK60012 comes up as 02/2001.
My coupe is LK60049 which comes up as 05/2001.
What are the last seven digits of your cars VIN#?

Mine ends in 60007. Are all of them you mention above, going back as
early as 04/2000, S54 cars made early? By the way, what is "EPC"?

Please post or send me the last 7 digits of your vin (AB12345 format), and I'll post a DCS report for you.

EDIT: Ooops, saw your VIN above. Here's your report:

Interesting that PRE-PRODUCTION is an option.

Maybe I could've gotten mine sooner if I chose that option ("ordered" 11/00/delivered 8/01).

Just a way to differentiate special models, special production specs, etc. for pre-production cars. If you look at the first Z4, X5, and 5er demos, they'll all say "999-- Launch Supply". Also, alot of cars have the infamous "100% options" option, which leads people to incorrectly assume their car is loaded. In fact, this just means that it has 100% of the appropriate items for it's market-- all the proper US spec items in a US spec car, for example. Even base cars have "100% options".

LK60007 on the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog) comes up with a 08/2000 production date.

Thanks, I've never seen one of those before. Guess since I've never seen them before, like Randy said, I thought it amusing they actually put "pre-production" as an option. Obviously since I've never used either the DCS or the EPC Ron mentions, I wouldn't know, but any guesses as to why the dates come up different? Anybody know what the pre-production cars are used for? Do they ever make changes after these cars that don't get retrofitted?

Ooops! My turn to not notice something. I asked about the difference in dates, but on looking at it closer, the DCS has a production of 8 or 9/2000 (a little fuzzy, or is it my eyes????) Either way, it basically the same date as the one from the EPC. All I'd noticed at first was the 1/22/2001 date on the DCS.
